    Hi,

I'm looking for a documentary that was broadcast during the late 1960's that features a close family member. I don't even have a name for the programme and I'm considering contacting RTE archives in search of it, despite only having a few details to go on.

I've googled and found quite a few articles stating that RTE wiped a lot of shows in the 60's and 70's - Wanderly Wagon, the Late Late etc. I'm wondering is the same true of documentaries? Was there a policy in place to protect this sort of factual programming, or do I have very little hope of finding the documentary in question?

Would be really grateful for advice, thanks.

AFAIK, items that were wiped were studio based shows shot on tape - tape was expensive and thus wiped and reused. Documentaries were generally shot on film so there is a much greater chance of the RTE archive having the footage, as long as it was an original production.

Contact the RTE archive, they are very helpfully. Their charges vary depending on what you are looking for. There is usually a research fee and a small copy charge for non-commercial stuff.

If you know the exact title and year of broadcast you should be fine as their researchers charge by the hour. They are trying to put a lot of the archive online so have a look there too. - http://www.rte.ie/laweb/arc/arc_index.html -

If you have no joy at RTE try the Irish Film Archive at the IFI.

Thank you for your advice, Evilivor. It is nice to know that I may have a better chance of finding it given that it's a documentary.

I have the year of broadcast and a few other details so I will try and get as much extra information as I can, consult the RTE archive and as you say, try the IFI if I have no luck.:)

AFAIK, there was 2 Wanderly Wagon DVD releases in total. HMV had them in their shops up to recently.
