I don't think I'd be confortable knowing that noone can see you from their car... I don't think this is a good idea on any Irish road.

you're probably right for ireland, but some where more bike aware i think it could be great

Some brave lad on my commute has one. He's very low down. I saw a jeep driver almost flatten him from behind in the dark one evening. The driver was very in the wrong. He has a flag sticking up from the back but its hard to see it in the dark.

There's an old guy who cycles through town on one. God knows how he's survived so far. He usually wears tweed, and has his brown leather satchel on the back. He's almost invisible....
I've nearly hit him a few times on Nassau St. / Sth. Leinster St.

Saw a guy on one heading up the Enniskerry - Glencree road on the hill just outside Enniskerry a few weeks back as I was descending.

    Just looked horrible. Why?

I've seen this guy on Morehampton Road in heavy traffic - I think he's crazy to be that low in traffic.

Well he has managed to reach his 50's, he'll probably be fine.

I see a guy around East Point sometimes. I like to think that it's Tunney, but I doubt it.

There's a guy who cycles up and down the Clontarf Road cycle track on a sideways bike. It's a mad looking thing, he seems to be able to steer the front and back wheels independently.

Anyone seen this chap? Or know where he got the bike?

Edit: sidewaysbike.jpg It looks like this

    I'm no ornithologist but I suspect that's a cuckoo.

I've seen sideways cycling man a few times on Critical Masses here.

I think that the cycling community (whatever that means) must embrace
diversity in its ranks - like all good societies.

So more pictures of strange bikes -

Live long and prosper to all cyclists - as they say - just make sure your
more visible than a flare for Dublin traffic

How was the jeep driver 'very in the wrong' if the bike is so low and the flag almost invisable in the dark? Because hew/she is a big/bad 4x4 driver?

Maybe because they did something stupid or illegal that the OP saw and didn't bother taking the post further off topic?

Get off your high horse. I'm more anti-idiot than I am anti-jeep. It looked like jeep man was going over the speed limit. And though I don't have an internal speed camera, a reasonable guess would suggest he was. He then tail-gated a car. Swung into a 24 hour bus lane to undertake, locked the wheels and almost hit Mr. Recumbent. Recumbent man had 2 rear lights, his little flag and was doing nothing wrong.

That is my best recollection as it was about 5 months ago. Thanks for asking though

I used to own a car which was probably lower than a typical recumbent, and I never got run over. Like cycling, you just need to be aware of your size.

I'm sure with enough flags and lights they are fine.

Jeep man in question probably wouldn't have seen a proper cyclist either.

That's it, kick the recumbant brigade while there are none here to defend themselves.

I do think they are a tad odd also :)

Look, "as long as they're riding their bikes" and all, but when I see a recumbentist I can't help thinking of this:
