I am thinking of changing my .243 for either a .270 or 30.06! I intend hunting in SA in the next couple of yrs. Anyone have experiance of 30.06 for hunting in Ireland ?

anything the .270 can do, the 30-06 can do better. The 30-06 would be the minimum that i would bring to Africa. Have you considered the 300 win mag?

The 30-06 can be had in factory loads from 110 to 220 grain

Both are good rounds with different limits. .270 is flatter than a .30-06, but carries buckets of energy, especially with the 150gr loads. .30-06 offers the facility to shoot up to 220gr though, so it depends on your quarry. By all accounts, .270 is excellent for plains game, as is .30-06. Unless you're hunting something dangerous or truly massive, you're not going to be under-gunned with either.

the 30,06 is a fine cal .with a great range of ammo and gr weights from 110gr to 220gr or so .
with the right bullet and good shot placement you should have no worries

compared to the 30,06 the 270 in a like for like bullet is as good if not better ..
    at 200 yds using a federal ballistics tip in the 270 a 130gr and a 150gr in the 30,06.

    speed in fps 270, 2,626 the 30,06 2,492 at 200yds

    enegry fp 270 1,990 the 30,06 2,068 at 200yds

    wind drift 270 2.8" the 30,06 3.0" at 200yds

bullet drop zero 100 yds at 300yds the 270 drops 10.7" the 30,06 drops 12,2"

what i have seen of the 30,06 it will not put a animal down any quicker or better that the .270 .

Thanks lads. I have used a .270 in Northern Europe with both 150g RWS & 154g Sako Hammerheads to great effect on Moose, but have not fired a 30.06. The reason for 30.06 is that I am considering a fullstock rifle & the barrel will not be long enough for the magnum rounds so I am restricting my choice of calibre.

used a 270 and 30-06 for a number of years two fine calibres, now have 308,30-06 instead of 270 my preference

Have 30.06, have shot plenty of deer in ireland with it and has no problem stopping them, the .270 is almost identical ballistic wise until the range gets to 500+ then the 06 is top dog, they both have huge range of ammo available altho id be going with the 06 if i were shooting abroad,

not so at 500yds using the above bullets .
the 270 is faster ,flatter shooting ,less wind drift, the 30,06 has more energy at 500 yds, 34 foot pounds. 1,290 to 1,243.

so at 500yds the 270 has the edge with the stated loads.

data from federals wed site compare chart.

I get a better kick out of getting in close, but I am more worried about something with big teeth getting too close to me. So not too worried about what it's like at 500 yds.

i was talking bout same weight bullets in both, not important, if it has big teeth then the bigger gun would be for me.

with a 150gr bullet in each the .270 beats the 30,06 on every count ,

    OP,

with a Remington do "reduced recoil" loads ie they download 300 win mag to 30-06 power recoil levels. This would make it manageable for Irish conditions and you can step up to full power loads for africa.

They also do a reduced load for .30-06. I am unaware of their availabilty

I know you asked 270 or 30-06 but this is my .02c worth

    i have shoot with .270 and .300 w/m in S/A
and most of the group had .270 and there was no issues with .270
    (hit them it stoped then)

Remington do a sabot round in 30/06 with a .22 cal bullet which would make it a very versatile caliber.

    Remington® Express® 55 PSP. Mussel velocity 4080 FPS, 100yd 3484, 200yd 2964, 300yd 2499, 400yd 2080, 500yd 1706.

It is on the restricted list here in the nanny state, but the OP was thinking of Africa. If we could get it here it would make the perfect fox and deer rifle.

Actually for Africa I'd at least take a look at .300 RUM and .30-378 Weatherby Magnum. If your shoulder is up for it that is ;)

    If I ever get to shoot F-Class I want a .300 Pegasus!

Hi crowsnightmare, I was looking at a full stock Heym in .270 last weekend, absolutely beautiful piece of equipment. It has a new straight pull bolt action, might take a bit of gettin used to but looks like a nice alternative...
I had a picture on the phone but couldn't transfer it.. Here's a link to a US website with pictures..

Hi Smallfry. I have looked at the Heym SR 30 a while back & was impressed. I have used a straight pull before & once I got used to it I got quite attached to it. I have already decided on a straight pull action on whatever rifle I buy. At the minute I am leaning towards the 30.06.

by the way Sabot amunition is on the restricted list as far as I know!
