Why not look at the Hungarian Klassic range by schmidt and bender?
They are the exact same components but assembled in Hungary to keep the cost a little lower. You really can't go wrong. I have an 8x56 on my savage .223, works better than I could ask.

This is my Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50 tactical with the target turrets on my 223 CZ Varmint. Cost here about €750, I got it off E bay S/H @€;430 and I got another from the sales section on airgunbbs S/H @€;399 for my 308.
I'm thinking that the Bushnell are one of the better scopes at the middle of the price range.
I also have an Elite 3200 10x40 again with the target turrets sitting atop of my CZ 22lr price here €399 got S/H for €120 from E bay.

And don't forget get yourself some good mounts to equal the quality of the scope.
I used the Millet angle-loc mounts from MidwayUk on the Bushnell Elite scope above

OP a 56mm objective on a .223 is HUGE. If presume you're going for targets/foxes. There's no real need for a 56mm objective here. Its not like the rifle is for stalking.

have a look at meopta scopes.. they have a meostar...4x16x44 tac

very good scope... i got them from www.europtic.com

NO I use my sister in the UK as a go-between.

John Greene has the agency here in Ireland BUT it's still not up and running yet and that's well over a year now that he is talking about getting it set up.

56mm obj = light transmission = ninghttime shooting = lamping

actually the whole point of a 56 mm lens is that you don't need to lamp

and a good quality 42mm will beat a bad 56mm lense anyday

I had a 8-32x60 AG IR on my 22rl and then on my 223 search for photo's.
They are an OK scope and good for the money. My son has the 6-24x56 AG IR on his 223.

But when I looked through a Bushnell there was no going back and sold the Nikko.
My son has a 4-12x40 Bushnell Banner on his 22lr. In the US they put the Banners on anythng up to a 300 win mag.

you still need a lamp, but on a clear night you can make out shapes, silhouette . the big advantage is the huge field of view, makes it very easy to find your target for a quick shot.

Make sure your scope is in the second focal plane for target shooting or you won't be able to see the bull.

On a reasonably limited budget I'd be looking at Leupold or Burris.

Not correct to say SFP or you wont see bull.
Depends entirely on size of reticle.

unargued. And lamping is not legal everywhere. And if I want to go shooting wild boar in Germany I need something x56 anyway.

Well if you're lamping, you don't usually don't have the scope cranked to 20X, so at lower power the FOV should be good enough.

The OP is going lamping with a .223 not shooting running boar in Germany

How does it hold up to a Hawke - if you are in a position to compare?

I've not tried any Hawke scopes, others will comment here on them I'm sure.

i never crank up past 10 anyway, no need , ragardless . when you have a larger ob then at what ever mag you will have more light pulled in and a very clear field of view. essential for lamping

Lads I was in Stakelums(gun and rod) in thurles last week and this Hawke sidewinder caught my eye http://www.hawkeoptics.com/riflescopes/sidewinder/index.php
After taking it out side for a look down the street with it I could not fault it for the price(350 euro)It was the 6-24x,mildot and even wound up to 24x it is very clear out to around 400 yds.the reticle is fine enough to do your 300yd target shooting.I have had 3 differant bushnell scopes in my time and this ranks up there with them if not better..The lockable turrets and the clarity at full zoom(24x) is what I think gives it the edge over the bushnell elite 4200. Never mind the poxy wheel that comes with it..you can take that off and give it to the dog to play with.
If I was in the hunt for a budget varmint/long
range scope I would definately give this one a go.

As said before here/depends entirely on quality of Lens and coatings
Plus X times light is also Xtimes darkness.

I have a hawke endurance 30 series on my 17 hmr, great piece of glass very crisp and clear. Its great at dusk and dawn. Have observed a fox coming down the field at well over 200 plus yards at 2300 hrs during the summer time. The Light was all but gone but you could still see this lad making his way down through the field. Mine is a 3-12x 50 with the illuminated reticle.

i agree with u entirely. when you add good glass to a 56 ob you are on a winner . i have a schmit & bender 2.5x10x56. on my steyr 6.5x55 for stalking. my original question was, [can any recommend a good mid priced scope for lamping & a bit of targeting].

    Define mid priced??
Ok take a look at falcon optics,uk company using Jap gear,a good reliable scope for around 300e,i have a Menace, well built and sturdy, holds POI without question but FOV is less than should be,i would buy another
As for objective,i have a 25yr+ old 42 obj Diatal which has better FOV and light gathering than most 3/500e 50/56 obj scopes i've seen(at 6x)and IMO very little to be gained with top end 56 over simular 50 obj

i would say €500 ish to be about right for a 223 without going crazy. i have a halk nighteye 6x20x50 on my .22 and i find it good enough for that .
