Hey, i drove my car for a month before realising i was out of tax. I stopped driving it for 2 months, but did take it out 2/3 times for matters that left me with no option to. Insurance etc is all in...

Just wondering, whats the story with saying my car was off the road, so i wont have to pay arrears? What factors do they look at when they do a check to see if its been off road? m50 toll, parking fines, speeding, points?

I need to get the car on the road asap

    Cheers

They check tolls etc. once no parking fines or tolls etc you should be fine. But theres always as risk if its not the truth.. Its not exactly massive to back tax is i'd assume?

your required to get a Garda to sign the form as witness to say YOU declare it was off the road.

You get the form and bring it to the Garda Station. It's usually just a formality, but tbh your car wasn't off the road, you drove it in the intervening period. So I'd recommend you just do the right thing and pay the tax you owe.

if you didn't get any fines while you drove it, sure just get the gardai to stamp the form to say it was off the road. loads of people do it. why would you throw away money?!

Leaving aside the obvious arguments against "loads of people do it", one reason would be that if you were caught, you'd be throwing away even more money in fines, court appearances, etc.

The Gardai don't even ask for a reason just sign the form.

I did this a few times when I worked abroad for a few months at a time.

Similiar situation at the mo have a company van haven't used the car in moths tax is now out and it galls me to pay a years tax when I will only use the car maybe 40 days out of the year don' realy want to sell it as it is handy to have a car now and again.

Who cares if you drove without tax or not, don't throw away money on backtax The only time I even heard of paying backtax was when you are caught for no tax.

You are now willing to tax it and this is what matters. Some people really have high horses. Print off the form (if you haven't got it already*) and get the local guard or station to fill it in and tax that puppy from June 1st, taxing it tomorrow would be wasting 20days tax! Get the form filled at the end of the month and tax it at your Co. Council Motor Tax office or post it back.

*If haven't got a printer the Gardai will have the form anyway.
