....Birth Ratios (SBMs) are big news in Asia.
    :D

I was at a talk today by a guy who's an expert in this field. Basically he was talking about the ratio of male:female births in some countries.

Globally there's about 105 boys born for every 100 girls. But in some countries it's as high as 120!!!!

It's mostly in places where boys are valued more highly than girls. IN these places, there's access to ultrasound facilities in every tiny town. So, the people find out early in the pregnancy whether they're expecting a boy or girl. If it's a girl, she gets aborted.

But the mad thing is.....he says most academics agree that this practice has led to the loss of 50 million girls worldwide over the last 30 years!!!!!! Mental. He says most of those losses have been in India and China.

he didn't give any sources for these estimates, but it was a real eye opener for me anyway.

its farcical really - but in a one child society in china and a dowry society in india - they clearly choose men over women.

Now that the world is largely at peace without major war - this has created this ratio.

Previously - women outnumbered men (and this set forward a culture of polygamy in some sectors) because so many men were killed in war that there were too many women floating around single........

    Interesting times............

It has created huge societal problems in eg China. Firstly cos of the one-child policy: they end up being spoilt little beggars who can't share or get on well with others (little emporeres); and secondly cos who can they have relationships with/get married to? Lots of competition for available females, leading of course to trouble for the girls: kidnapping, rape etc.

Should just reverse the dowry laws, ie make the husbands family pay. That way there'l still be a violation of human rights but it will help even up the demographics

Love how this is already one of the most viewed threads :p

Think I read about an Indian consultant who was offering those ultrasounds on the sly in the UK but got caught, ran away, and has never been seen since.

Very true. And it's impinged on poorer neighbouring countries where trafficking of women and young girls has increased, to cater for the demand.

Interestingly, in countries where there's a policy of encouraging only 2 children (through limitation of benefits etc) there's a much lower abortion rate for the first pregnancy, as they have a chance that the second baby will be a boy. But, where the first baby was a girl, there's much higher rates of abortion, as presumably they view this as being their last chance to have a boy.

I was wondering how they got the ultrasounds read. They seem to have machines in veery tiny village in a lot of these countries, but was unsure how they'd get someone to interpret them.

Apparently, in several Asian countries, abortion is illegal on the grounds of sex. But it's not illegal for family planning reasons. So, the deal is that you ask about the sex of the fetus in a kind of incidental way. Then they tell you, and you leave.

Then you come back the next day and ask for an abortion for family planning reasons.

on a more serious note though, say your expert guy is half right, and such practices have led to say the deaths of 25 million girls worldwide, and say half of that number "would" have had kids of their own, then we're looking at at least 12.5 million unconceived children. that means then that in the longer term your looking at 37.5 million less people on the planet. thats just under 10 times our population as a whole country.

makes it more shocking when you start even doing rudimentary figures.

Did your lecturer outline any strategies with regard to prevention?
