    Hiya,
13 handicapper, just started playing with Titleist Pro V1x's. Noticed a big inprovement in my game around the green. But there's no way I can afford to be buying these new.
Can anyone suggest a cheaper equivalent to this ball that would give me pretty much the same touch/feel?
Alternatively, can anyone suggest a way to get 2nd hand/lake Pro V1x's in the Dublin area?

    thanks

    P

Halpenny Golf in Swords sell bags of 12 2nd hand prov1 balls for around 15 euro. You'll be lucky to find a box of x's though... the prov1 and prov1x are normally mixed.

McGuirks do boxes of refurbed ones for around 30 euro.

You can also get provs stamped with practice for around 30 euro. Look for a white prov1 box.

Again, with all these, you're probably looking at mixed prov1 and prov1x.

Goto american golf in Tallaght. Take a look at their "Practice" Pro-V1's. Majority of them are v1x's and something like 12 for €19.

Apart from the obvious, what is the difference between a practice pro v1 and a normal pro v1?

Nothing the normal handicap golfer would notice.

Isn't there something about not being legal to use a ball that has practice stamped on it?

Thought I heard someone mention this in relation to the ProV's

That used to be the case, but i believe now that that has changed and they are allowed to be used in competitions/matches. Only heard this last week as it apparantly happened in an inter club match(under 15's as it happens!!) where one was using a ball marked with practise and it was deemed to be allowed.

Not sure about that Paul. There was controversy in a Metropolitan Cup match 2 weeks ago where on the 8th hole it was noticed that a player was playing a proV1 marked practise.

As it was matchplay the player in question was deemed to have lost those 8 holes, so from 3 up he went 8 down. I later found out that the correct ruling was actually a loss of a maximum of 2 holes.

Teitlist lost a court battle and were found to be in breach of copyright on the old prov's so they are selling all the old models with "practice" stamped on it.

I heard about that incident.. was that Forrest Little match?

The rule book changed quite recently and there has been a few minor changes and i'm led to believe that the practise balls are allowable. I will however stand to be corrected.

    Decision 5-1/4

    Q. - What is the status of ‘X-out’, ‘refurbished‘ and ‘practice‘ balls?
    A. - ‘X-out’ is the common name used for a golf ball that a manufacturer considers to be imperfect (usually for aesthetic reasons only, e.g., paint or printing errors) and, therefore, has crossed out the brand name. A ‘refurbished‘ golf ball is a second-hand ball that has been cleaned and stamped as ‘refurbished‘.

In the absence of strong evidence to suggest that an ‘X-out’ or ‘refurbished‘ ball does not conform to the Rules, it is permissible for such a ball to be used. However, in a competition where the Committee has adopted the condition that the ball the player plays must be named on the List of Conforming Golf Balls (see Note to Rule 5-1), such a ball may not be used, even if the ball in question (without the X’s or without the ‘refurbished‘ stamp) does appear on the List.

In most cases, ‘practice‘ balls are simply listed, conforming golf balls that have been stamped “Practice”, in the same way that golf balls often feature a club or company logo. Such balls may be used even where the Committee has adopted the condition that the ball the player plays must be named on the List of Conforming Golf Balls. (Revised)

Was about to post the rule from the R and A website but licksy answer is much more detailed and i'd presume its taken from the decisions book which is the book to have and consult whenever there is a difference of opinion on a ruling...

Plus, if the ball was non-conforming, IMO you would be disqualified rather than lose the holes?

Correct the rule states: "the use of a ball that does not conform to the rules will result in disqualification. However, the player would have had to make a stroke at a non-conforming ball for the disqualification penalty to apply."

Excuse my ignorance - I glaze over within seconds of starting to read the official rules, think it's something to do with how they're phrased.

So are these Practise ProVs OK to use in all competitons ?

I have a box of them but am afraid to use them in competition at the moment in case they don't conform and some guy starts quoting decision 5-1/4 at me and I will end up kicking him in the non-conforming balls. ;-)

Thats the one Paul , against Corballis.

I was in the bar after a a game when the call came in. I think they wanted an answer from someone in our club that was a GUI official.

Wasn't quite sure of the ruling myself but sounds like an incorrect one was made wither way.

the difference between balls is spin.example a pro v1 will spin better than a donnay or dunlop ball.if i were you i wouldnt be to bothered about using pro v1's all the time, theres other good balls for less money, srixon, callaway, nike are just as good as pro v1 and cost a lot less £££.i will say this though, try to avoid hard balls like donnay, pinnicle, play with softer compound ball its better for spin
