Internships in IT (Java)

I'm currently finishing up a one year post-grad Diploma in IT in DCU. I'm hoping to eventually end up working as a programmer.

I'm planning on doing the Sun Certified Java Programmer certificate after I've finished. I'm also thinking about doing a second year part time in my current course, which will basically see me complete a substantial project and turn my qualification from a post grad Diploma into a Masters. No idea what I'd so as a project yet though.

I know with the way things are at the moment I stand a 0% chance of getting a job as a java programmer, but does anybody know what the current market for taking on interns is? I'd really just like to get some experience and learn as much as I can, not all that worried about getting paid yet. Are interns even taken on in this field? Considering how they could end up making things worse than they already were.

Also would I be better off waiting until I had the SCJP, and had started my project (so I could put something about it on the CV) before applying to companies?

There are some companies that are still hiring Java Graduates. IBM and Accenture are the main ones, I know people who are interviewing them. There's also a crowd called Murex on Irish Jobs who seem to have a Grad position. Not sure about internshops but no harm in getting your CV in to them stating that is what you are looking for. Also have a look at Irish Jobs and Recruit Ireland and see what companies are hiring Java developers, even if it is a Senior role. Then send in your CV speculatively to the hiring manager. With regards your certification, put it on your CV that you are currently studying for one.
