That was never a mystery. It was all in the season 3 premiere. Mr Friendly made her wear the dress so she could have breakfast with Ben. Ben was just being creepy and messing with her head.

I believe Abrams (who co-wrote that script) put that in there as a reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

There was also the breaking of the rocks, and moving them from here to there. It was all pointless stuff put in to fill episodes, or from the characters point of view, to break them down.

Yeah although the breaking of the rocks was part of the building of the runway. The same runway Ajira 316 landed on this season. I thought this was pretty cool.
