    Hi guys,

I'm going through hostelworld.com with a fine toothcomb here but was wondering if anyone on here has any personal experience of hostels in New York City?

I'm thinking of booking into one called The Widget Hotel but I am not too sure right now due some of the reviews I am reading although it does have a 65% approval rating and it's cheap as well.

Any suggestions would be mucho appreciato!

I stayed in the Widget last year (when it was called the Continental). The rooms are pretty average but unless your fussy about this considering the price for a NY hostel then you'll be grand.

Loads of europeans stay there, so its a good laugh with them. Theres a basement where they all hang out and its fairly cool. One thing though, the price it says youll pay wont be the price youll actually pay. There's a 14% NY city tax that they add on when you check in and pay the rest, so watch out for that.

Thanks Corholio, some very mixed reviews out there to the point that I am really thinking of switching to book somewhere else! Sounds like you'd a grand time though.

To be honest as long as the place is clean and doesn't smell then it can be whatever it wants to be - we only want a basic and clean hostel after all.

I stayed in the hosteling international on 103rd http://www.hinewyork.org/. I went on my own and shared a room with maybe 3 other females. The kitchen and chill out areas had just been redone and were real nice.
There were plans on the walls for the bathrooms to be re-done as well, but were clean and fine to use.
There was a locker for each person, just remember to bring a lock. The subway was about a block away and I had no problem walking home at night on my own.

The Broadway hostel on 230 W 101st St was really nice, totally safe always had a doorman and a few security men, it was DIRT cheap with fast and cheap net access, a really nice movie room with free popcorn, two blocks for the main west side subway and very very clean. Also had loads of travel info and the staff were really nice and helpful. Its in a nice neighbourhood and there were plenty of cheapish restaurants around it.
    Fine for a few days.
