Is the Secret Admirer dead?

Im watching this really old episode of the Simpsons where Bart Fabricates a secret admirer for his Teacher and it occurs to me thats probably the most recent time I've ever heard of one. Where did they all go? Is it just some piece of American Culture that slips under the radar? Did it go the way of the Stalker and the Restraining Order?

Yes the secret admirer is well and truly dead.

News stories of stalkers and serial killers have created mass paranoia when it comes to that sort of thing. Its nearly impossible to be a secret admirer without freaking the person out massively which was never the intention of the whole secret admirer thing.

these days you have to be ridiculously careful not to freak anyone out. back in the good old days people would think nothing of walking past someones house and slipping in an ol anonymous love note but if you done it now it would end up inside in a resealable plastic bag at the local barracks.

Secret admirers do still exist, just by a different name. Sex pests. (Or stalkers, in polite company).
