Sky coverage of Lowrys vernacular

What did people watching on sky think of their repeated reference to Shane Lowrys few choice unfortunate words when he hit some shots he considered not the best, he naturally wouldnt be used to mics in such close proximity but sky kept going on about it and how kids were watching etc etc,

I missed it, what exactly did he say?? Was it just once???
I love it, its great hearing it from a golfer !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭stockdam

I didn't hear it but he'll have to be more "professional" as he'll loose lots of money if he does it again - no sponsor will want to be associated with the adverse publicity.

I thought Howard Clark was a bit OTT about it tbh. The guy was competing for his home open as an amateur, the last thing on his mind is what the mics pick up.

Didn't watch the sky coverage but did notice lowry shout a few "fcuks" over the last 2 days. Not ideal for tv but a whole new experience for the chap.

Woods is still fairly partial to a bit himself and spits a bit which is worse in my book.

It's a bit rich coming from Howard Clark. Twenty years ago I was collecting stats for the Euro Tour in the Irish Open in Portmarnock, it entailed walking the course with a match and recording driving distance, sand saves etc. I had the "pleasure" of going out with Clark and John Bland one afternoon. Clark was an angry foul-mouthed boor, effing and blinding constantly and taking his frustration out on his caddy Fanny Sunnesson, however he wasn't swearing loud enough for mics to pick it up but he was not a nice guy, Bland just got on with it, they both shot 73!

I followed Lowry at the Irish amateur last weekend in Royal Dublin. Not surprised at all with the language. He was at it all day. Funny. I'm sure once he turns pro Chubby Chandler or whoever will make him do some media training.

So what if there were a few f's & b's. Will he get an infraction;)

He will as has been stated go on a media course and all will be ironed out

I thought sky's reaction was over the top. Lowery was keeping his mind on the game not on the fact the furry mic was practically shoved under his nose.

Everyone would use the odd choice words. He did well.
But sky's over reaction of he should be fined, the professionals would never do it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭Paulusmaximus

seen him at the west and he was the same. I know we all do it, but he does want to make a living out of the game so he is going to have to swap his "for Fcuk sake shane" to a "c'mon shane" or a "jeez" etc. I know he's not used to the mics but he will need to change

Well he is young and is not used to such close up scrutiny.

If sky were really upset why did they not turn down their Mic's.

    haha watch it :)

Jeez big woop, his 1st pro event, i'm sure you get more kids at soccer matches every week hearing worse from everyone on the pitch.

I heard it when he played the shot and then after the round when sky interviewed they told him to mind his words, FFS

I agree with you completely. Lots of the pros swear, they just know how and when to do it. Shane will learn soon enough. It didn't help that he was the focus of so much attention on the course with Sky all over him like a rash.

As for spitting, did you see Dustin Johnson at the Masters spitting on the green. So some golfer comes along after him and has to line up his putt with a gob of spit in the way. Very 'professional'.

tbh I would be more worried about the crowd behavior than a few f's from the Lowry. The crowd cheering when Robert Rock missed puts and then invading the green at the end. Was a joke in my opinion. Anyone cheering a missed put by a golfer would be evicted from the course anywhere else.

I think that's the point. Lowry has a fantastic future ahead of him but to attract the sponsors he is going to have to get his act together so Shane drop the foul language and about three stone too :pac:

I can vouch for this too - heard Clark at it myself in Portmarnock.

Really? I thought the crowd were generally very, very good. The only real time they cheered was when Rock missed his putt on the third play off hole. At that point i think it was understandable too. Rock was an absolute credit the whole way through too... held himself incredibly well.

By the way, i bet Mr 3 is rubbing his hands this morning... great coverage all week, it's on the front page of every newspaper in the country today and in many more worldwide too. €3m well spent if you ask me!!

Credit has to be given to 3 alright. Did a great job given the short period of time they had before the event.

None - does that mean I can't have an opinion on Lowry or was it just an ill thought out pointless question? The issue is about his attractiveness to sponsors not about his ability as a golfer, which I applaud. I would expect top class sponsors to be more attracted to a clean cut, fit looking guy than they would be to an obese foul mouthed one.

I wonder what John Daly's career sponsorship earnings are to say David Toms?

Part of me hopes Shane stays who he is. Something tells me he will need to make a few lifestyle/swing changes to make a career on tour though. I'm sure he'd admit that himself.

Definite changes to be made although from people who know him he has really started to work on diet/fitness and cut down on the "few pints" as Brian Cowen would say.

Technically he didn't look as tight as alot of the pros but just shows how good he is if he can win with his imperfections.

He's said himself that he is working on his weight with Eric Millar and has shed a few pounds. If he feels he needs to lose weight then so be it. If he doesnt feel he needs to then thats grand too. Unless you're his doctor I don't think you should be suggesting a target weight loss or commenting on it either.

Yes I did notice that and from what I saw, the green got the contents. The next step might see him clearing his nose like a footballer..

What iritates me more about Tiger is the abuse he gives the tee box when his drives go wide (and there are quite a few of them), no commentator rebukes him on that (not that I have heard anyway)

+1, it is expected that the crowd would be behind Shane more than Rock anyways. The only thing i remember is when Rock was 2 strokes clear and Lowry made the putt for birdie they kind of cheered when Rock missed his.

Have you seen half the guys on tour? I don't think he'll be worrying about his weight to attract sponsors, he is on a trraining course to lose some weight, but that is for the benefit of his game.

Off topic, I know, but I was sitting at a table with four older gents in Greystones clubhouse on Saturday, and not one of them knew what 3 was. I know 60 year olds aren't 3's target audience, but their sponsorship slots that topped and tailed RTE's ad breaks didn't make it clear who/what 3 is. I call that a missed opportunity.

As for Shane's swing having imperfections, how many times would Jim Furyk have heard the words: "you're a useful golfer, laddy, but sort out that loop the loop at the top of your swing." Anyone remember David Duval!!!

I thought the crowd weren't bad. Ok jeering is annoying (been there on the end of it) but it wasn't aimed at Robert. In fact I think the level of respect when Robert was putting was very good. I think he'll understand that the crowd weren't routing for him but that they also respected his determination to win......it takes two good players to make a great playoff.

Well played Robert and I hope this gives you a lot of confidence for the future.
