Marine Diesel Engine query

I have just replaced the pump impeller on my boat's engine (BMC 2.2 diesel) but am not getting water through to the exhaust. The system seems clear from the pump onwards, as putting water in at the pump outlet comes out at the exhaust, so the problem seems to be at the inlet side. The inlet strainer is clear, and the sea cock open. I'm wondering if the problem could be that the pump is sucking air through the faceplate. I used the existing gasket, with a smear of vaseline on it. Anyone got any ideas? Much thanks in anticipation.
