I'm sitting here watching "realing in the years" and its the year of 1994, the year Ireland did well in the world cup, i remember the passion and excitment Ireland used to have ... that seems to be gone.

It was the same year that Riverdance was launched ( a part of me cant believe it was 15 years ago ) but again it was something exciting that happened for Ireland i was glued to the tv watching it when it happened, and im still glued everytime it comes on the screen.

But a thought crossed my mind, whats happened to the passion in ireland, the part of you that is proud of a country, a country that wants to really sell ireland for what it has the achievemnts ireland has to show, the strength and fantastic people it has living here??

I know there s so much going on at the moment, the big R, crappy politicians etc, but there must be something Ireland has shown the world since 1994 ????

Can you think of anything because i cant think up anything that excited a nation as it did that year, that made us all stand up and be proud to be Irish, can you ?

I thought that "Reeling in the years" was on last night for post 94, only they'd renamed it "Apocalypse Now"

    The horror:(

I beg to differ. Ireland's still doing great things. Won a big Rugby competition (i don't know much about sport in general, so sorry if this is wrong, but it was the rugby world cup wasn't it?).
Besides sporting stuff, Irish culture is undergoing a resurgence. More people than ever learning Irish gaelic, etc.
And Ireland still knows how to throw a good party (St. patricks anyone?).

Good you should mention WC94 as that is precisely the point in history where Ireland stopped being a nation of head down, cap-in-hand apologists started to become a nation of jumped up little arrogant arseholes. Believe it or not but we actually went into that tournament talking about how great we were and how we were even going to win the tournament! It helped doubly of course that England didn't qualify that year so we for once could sneer and feel superior to the auld enemy.

After our early elimination from the competition the patriotism soon stopped. The 'acting like jumped up little arrogant arseholes' however continued to this day. :(

I suppose Padraig Harrington winning three majors would make some people proud.

I really don't see what makes the people of Ireland any more fantastic than other nationalalities, to be honest.

Dublin is Europe's friendlist city apparently (link). I know its not really an 'achievement', but at least someone thinks we're still friendly here!

if thats actually true its because all the unfriendly dubs are too busy bitching on boards.

i rarely go to dublin but all the bitchy argumentative 'get off my lawn' type dubs seem to be on here. they all seem to support the idea of snitching, car clamping and price increases to drive undesirables out of the area or simply to create more space for themselves. but i dunno if there really is such a thing as a friendly city, most people who live in densely populated places seem fiercely territorial and therefore unfriendly

Pfff, it's overrated to be honest, the whole country pride thing. We absorb so much of other cultures that we're not really Irish anymore, not so much of a bad thing really...

Grow up buddy, when we move away from this parish based mentality and look on ourselves as a collection of intelligent, talented, progressive and forward looking people we will again start punching above our weight and begin to feel proud to be Irish again.

ireland has probably lost some heart and from how i see it despite becoming more globalised some of our past generations were less ignorant of outside world., but its still good if you open your eyes.

i just hope ireland can overcome this rocky wave and come out happy and a better ireland on the other side.

What need you, being come to sense,
But fumble in a greasy till
And add the halfpence to the pence
And prayer to shivering prayer, until
    You have dried the marrow from the bone;
    For men were born to pray and save;
    Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,
It's with O'Leary in the grave.

Yet they were of a different kind,
The names that stilled your childish play,
They have gone about the world like wind,
But little time had they to pray
For whom the hangman's rope was spun,
And what, God help us, could they save?
    Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,
It's with O'Leary in the grave.

Was it for this the wild geese spread
    The grey wing upon every tide;
For this that all that blood was shed,
    For this Edward Fitzgerald died,
And Robert Emmet and Wolfe Tone,
All that delirium of the brave?
    Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,
It's with O'Leary in the grave.

Yet could we turn the years again,
And call those exiles as they were
In all their loneliness and pain,
    You'd cry `Some woman's yellow hair
    Has maddened every mother's son':
They weighed so lightly what they gave.
But let them be, they're dead and gone,
They're with O'Leary in the grave.

What the christ does all that mean

Its a poem written in the 1920's, reflecting on how there was no passion left in Ireland. I'm just saying how this topic is probably brought up generationally...

    "Romantic Ireland's dead and gone"

I think the poem itself was of repubilcan sentiment.

Fumble in the greasy till is also a godd line, showing the "Commercialism" of the day.

Twas written to impress a woman if I recall correctly.

Godo point though. Are we talking nostalgia here or simply pride of achievement on the world art/cultural/sporting stage?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

If 2009 was packaged as a 26 min long nostalgia laden music vid it would look damned exciting, esp in retrospect.

    Except emigration isn't an option.

94 was great and 88 and 90. The taxman turned a blind eye to the ould cash to avoid the 60% taxes and the priest turned a blind eye to the 10 yr. old moaning.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.
