Iv seen a coupe threads on this topic before and noticed something last week while driving to airport at 1 am.
Sorry if its been done before but..

Ok, so the motorway was fairly empty and im doing maybe 125kmh in the left lane..there is another car in the overtaking lane driving at id guess 110kmh..i just stayed in my lane and undertook but is this correct thing to do..i mean, im hardly going to vacate an empty lane to drive behind someone who probably doesnt have cop on to check mirror and see me waiting to get by..

Also on a side note, anybody else find it very annoying when there are 3 lanes coming onto a roundabout, with 2 lanes clearly marked for left only, and people decide to ignore this then cut across other drivers who have to retreat despite being 100% correct..the roundabout in question is at sandyford industrial estate, just before southbound entrance..

Done it myself on occasion. I'd say keep your wits about you if you do decide to undertake.

I've heard stories of guards pulling people for crossing all 3 lanes of the Naas road to overtake in lane 3, and then move back to lane 1 (technically correct, but could be considered weaving erratically, I suppose).

As with 99% of problems on our roads, some people are too damn lazy to pay attention to what they are doing.

I do it all the time. The amount of ignorant people that stay crawling in the right hand lane is unbelievable. These are the ones that should get done.

If someone is going considerably below the limit in the outer lane, I'll go under them.

A quick thread search would have answered this question - undertaking is illegal, but many people do it. Here are two recent threads on the subject:

That law would want to be changed. Undertaking a vehicle that is going the proper speed limit on the outside is not fine. But if people are crawling in the outside lane when plenty room to pull over, then that is a disgrace if someone gets done for undertaking this slow person.

Wouldn't it be safer to enforce the existing law on blocking the overtaking lane?

I think most decent drivers know when to do it, i.e. if it's safe to do so and the other driver is being an ignorant asshole. I normally would be cruising in the left hand land and when I see someone in front of me in the right hand lane I will move out and leave my indicator on. Sometimes they get the hint and move in, I'm doing one of two things here.

    1. I'm obeying the law
    2. I'm hopefully teaching them that they shouldn't be driving in the right hand lane unless they're overtaking. It's something that annoys me greatly.
