    Hi everyone,

I'm studying Photography in college and I'm thinking about buying a camera.

    A digital SLR one.

Roughly, I have up to 1,000 euro to spend, so I'm wondering what people would recommend?

I'm not that interested in brands, just looking for something high-quality and that's easy to use!

    Have you used one before?

First thing I'd reccommend is popping into a camera shop and actually playing about with them. See what you actually like using before going any further. If anyone in your class has one, see if you can play around with it for a while.

    Thanks! :)

I've used 35mm cameras before, film ones... didn't quite suit me, let's put it that way! :P

Haven't got much experience with digital SLRs.

I've heard very good things about Canon, so I'm going to read some reviews and see what I think, before heading into a shop!

Any ideas on where in Dublin does good deals on cameras?

Gunn's opposite Whelans is a great place to pop in to. They're nice folk inside there.

Canon/Nikon are generally the best bets if you're buying into a system, other options are Olympus, Sony, Pentax... and a few others. Tbh, at the entry levels, they're much of a muchness (No matter how much Landyman will pipe on about how Sony are the best thing since the camera obscura :pac: ).

Give them all a go, and see what you like.

    Cheers, I will do!

I've been into Gunn's before actually, to buy film for that damn 35mm camera!
Much cheaper than anywhere else I've found :D

I bought an Olympus E510 last year, they are a good starter camera, and they come with a good, well respected kit lens. I also got adapters so I can use other (older/manual) brands of lenses, ie. a Pentax, Olympus OM, Nikon. This give you great versatility and scope for.......well........having 'fun' with photography !
    For €1000 you could get:
Option 1: an entry-level camera Canon EOS 450D/1000D; Nikon D40/D60; Olympus E420/520/510; Pentax K100D/K200D; Sony A200/350. You will then have some monies left over for a camera bag, or lens, or tripod, or filters, or software, etc !!
Option 2: a better camera body, but............you won't have much left for 'other' things !!
/mmmmm........I'm tempted to sell my kit (with an eye on upgrading), would you be interested ? (PM me)

Ah go away you old fogie, you and your wooden box cameras......

I like my camera, it does exactly what i want it to. If i was to start with a different manufacture it probably would be olympus or nikon. I like the weather sealing on the oly and the crop factor, which would be useful for wildlife.

Oh and whats an a camera ocularis? @ fajitas, you still take better photographs then i ever will, even with a wooden camera :)

    Ah I'm only joking :)

Ocularis? Not a notion! Unless you meant a Camera Obscura - They're great fun to make :)

The best thing would be to look at the Sticky at the top of the page as it will answer most of your questions. Then come back here if you need more specific information.

I bought a Canon eos 400d (Digital Rebel) with the earlier, non-IS kit lens from VikingDirect about 18 months ago. I don't know if they still have this offer, but I really have enjoyed using the camera. There was a 70 euro cashback offer at the time and it might be worthwhile seeing if these incentives are still available. The newer kit lens is supposed to be much improved on my one.
