Just putting out a few feelers as to what the alternative scene is like in Galway. Are there many local bands or free musicians floating about? I'm looking to start something but I don't know where to start.

That's a very vague post so I don't know if my response will be much help. There are quite a few bands and musicians around Galway but it depends what kind of project you are looking to start and also what you play. If you put that information in your post you might get more appropriate responses.

I have played bass and guitar in various rock/metal bands over the last 14 years and speaking from experience I can tell you that in terms of availability there seems to be a lot of talented guitar players, some talented bass players, a few talented drummers and very few talented vocalists around.

Often the best players are already in a band or two so it can be difficult to get things organised but other times you can get lucky and find someone who hasn't been snapped up yet.

That's what I figured, suppose it's the same as dublin.

I'm 23 and have been playing guitar for about 10 years, so I am very much in the majority. At the moment I don't want to fix myself into a specific genre (other than a general rock area) but rather find some musicians who are open minded, progressive and dedicated.

Also I'd like to know about any venues for local alternative music, as I said I am new in town :)

Any replies would be really appreciated

Yeah, it's probably quite similar, just with a smaller pool of people :)

If you're interested, my band could do with another guitarist. As well as the dodgy recordings on MySpace, we've some YouTube videos here. If you're interested, send me a PM and we can arrange a time and place to meet up.

It depends what you classify as alternative. There are a bunch of bars who's playlists don't revolve around whatever rubbish is being pushed around the pop charts. Róisín Dubh has live bands regularly as do Sally Longs and The Quays.
