Pick up a bottle of Dipetane and stick about half a bottle in with a tenner of fuel, then fill up the tank and use the rest of the dipetene, do this the day before your re-test and also make sure your engine is v hot, so give it a good high-revv'ing drive before the re-test too..

cheers, i might definatly give that a go, i recently installed a universal oxygen sensor cause the other one was gone, im kinda worried its causing the problem, would i be better replacing it with the proper toyota one?

Would help to have the OEM sensor in general, but make sure the car has clean oil, also the sparks and air filter are in good condition..

AFAIK the universal oxygen sensors do NOT work on toyotas! Unfortunately you have to go out and buy the OEM equipmment at extortionate prices but at leat it'll work.

i might have to buy the original parts, does those nct readouts i typed above about the lambda sensor say that the sensor itself is not working right, just wonderin? :p

My car failed emissions due to a leaking sensor .

If you have been driving the car on the 'red/yellow light ' with no petrol in tank , it can cause the problems with lambda

Neither of which will affect the high idle in the slightest ...

just wondering, what is a high idle and what causes it?

    High idle = high revs.

    CAUSE: Foot on accelerator ;)

How many more of these NCT emissions threads are there going to be where people give bad advice. If the OP goes to his retest having "fixed" the car by putting Dipetane in the tank, he'll be throwing his 28 quid retest fee (+ the cost of the dipetane) down the drain because the car will fail again. There probably won't be enough time to book another retest so the car will need a full test so that's another 50 quid and the hassle that it entails.

Read the last few posts in this thread especailly the one from the guy who is an NCT tester

it rfeally is a tricky problem, i know where your coming from, sticking a fuel additive might not fix the problem but i suppose theres no harm in adding it into the tank and see if it helps, ill bring the car to my mechanic on monday and see what he has to say. i have a big feeling its the universal oxygen sensor i fitted. the car does seem to idle a lil rough once it heats up, in general, it used to idle extreemly rough before i fitted the new sensor, im kinda sick now i didnt spring out the extra 120 euro for an oem one lol

thank you to brien for some sense in a world gone mad...cosmo is a tester, and he has already stated what needs to be done for emissions, in response to a post from me. i did a bit of looking, and found a reasonable place that specialises in emissions, will diagnose and fix the problem on the day. lads..i did that fuel cleaner through the engine and basically wasted my time and money, do the right thing and get it checked out. link to emission specialists also on the page link brian posted.

forget the urban myths...from someone who tried to believe the nonsense, and paid the price...

ah i know the fuel cleaner stuff wont be a quick fix soloution but ill add it anyway, no harm in it i suppose lol, where abouts is this place?

Best to get your car's high idle problem sorted first. Sounds like your

cars O2 or temp sensor isnt working, diagnostic test from a mechanic

should tell what is the problem. Save you spending any more money than

    you need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 708 ✭✭✭celica1994

ah i got the diagnostic thing done 2 weeks ago and was told the left o2 sensor was gone, i replaced it with a universal sensor, perhaps this might be the cause of all my problems!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭Muckie

Bit of a crapper so, after replacing it. Maybe the universal one isnt

working as well as it should be! Did you notice any difference in the engine

running when you stuck it on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 708 ✭✭✭celica1994

yea, it seemed to run alot better but once the engine fully warms up it can idle a lil rough but nothing like it did before, honestly i just want to get the car up to scratch and flog it on, its a lovely looking car for its age but starting to look like a bit of a leamon lol

Nice motor alrite, friend of mine used to own one. Think your best bet is

to get the proper O2 sensor. Maybe the same mechanic who did the

diagnosic test could retest and fit the sensor, make sure its running

100% before the retest. Good luck.

to be honest, i expected toyota to be reliable when i was choosing a car but i was wrong lol. yea im going down there in the morning and im going to let him have a good lookl at it, i just hope its not the cat thats gone one it lol

i thought this was funny. i started a thread about my celica failing the emmisions and there was alot of debate about using the dipoane or whatever its called, the fuel additive anyways, after i left the car in with the mechanics as suggested i was walking home and just out of no where i seen a sticker with dipotane on it stuck to a nearby lamp post, i thought it was so funny, was it a sign from god lol???????:D

Bit freaky alright, was it a label off the bottle? Welcome to the forums btw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 708 ✭✭✭celica1994

ha yea, it was the label alright, but i thought it was so funny cause there was so much debate over using the stuff and the advise i went with was to bring it to an emmisions garrage, when i was walking home i seen the sticker on a lampost, i think its an omen lol!!!!

    Threads merged.

Makes more sense to those who didn't read your old thread.
