I live in Northern Ireland and can receive FTA programs from the Republic of Ireland in analogue, I've been advised that with the proper STB that I will also be able to receive them in digital format.

However to receive these signals I'm told I a box that is able to decode mpeg4, the standard that the RoI use. At the moment I want to spend big money as I hope to upgrade my old television sometime next year

I've come across a lidl receiver SL 35 T on offer from Monday and as they are a mainland European concern I'm wondering if this box is capable of decoding mpeg 4 transmissions, that seems to be the standard a lot of European countries have adopted

I've looked at the manual but can't seem to find what type of signal it decodes (oh hands up I don't know what I'm looking forconfused.gif) here's the LINK I'd appreciate it if someone could take a look and offer some advice

As an aside I have to say that any goods I've bought from Lidl in the past were well worth the money

The model is not offered for sale "down south" so might only be mpeg-2 (UK freeview).

It's a pretty safe bet that this won't work, all you will get is sound.

why not wait until the official launch as it may get put back and to be really clever wait and get a new tv with an MPEG4 dtt integrated. Saves on boxes.

Do nothing till there is a real service.

Who knows what next month or year will bring.

There is STILL no official start date.

Is there a date set for the official launch - or is that like asking how long is a piece of string :)

You are probably right the sensible thing to do would be to wait until I ditch the old television

opps sory didn't see watty's post

Had a look at the manual/specs for the reciever in question. It was vauge to say the least.

Given that we already have a sticky thread (although a table on the ICDG wiki would probably be neater) for MPEG4 compatible TV's maybe we should have similar for MPEG4 compatible:
    DVD recorders
    USB sticks
    DVB-T boxes

    What do people think ?

I bought the Silvercrest SL65T (I originally said SL35T that was due to a mistake in Lidl's online ad which has since been amended) yesterday afternoon in the knowledge that I have 28 days to test and if I don't like it return it for a full refund.

The first point of interest was the price down from £40 to £20 - advertised as a birthday special here in Northern Ireland.

I slotted it in last night and found no difficulty in setting it up it was a plain: a,b,c type operation. Im not a big TV watcher so over the next seven days or so I'll play around with it.

My initial impression is that the picture quality from the Lidl box is much better than I was getting with my Sagem ID60; sound to seems good

At the moment I'm a bit confused about the teletext service. The THE BOXS MANUAL says: 'Super fast videotext with a memory of 800 pages' [but] there is no support of MHEG-5. I'm going to have to figure that one out.

Before I bought I rang the help line with a very general inquiry and was plesantly surprised at how quickly the call was answered and the guy on the other end of the line seemed to know what he was talking about. I'll give him a call Monday or Tuesday and see what he has to say about the teletext service.

There are no slots for cards so, even thought I'm not, if I were minded to subscribe to other services I couldn't, at least not using this box.

One of my main reasons for trying this box is that I like to record programs and watch them at a later date and I was finding that difficult to do with my Sagem ID60, so we'll see what way the Silvercrest deals with recording

I've just come of the Silvercrest SITE and that they don't actually sell the 65 range of set top boxes in Great Britain only in Ireland

Anyway I've rambled on long enough. If anyone has the Silvercrest SL65T then please post any helpful advice you may have about the product. While I'm not tech minded, purely trial and error man myself, if anyone cares to ask a question well I will do my best to answer (simple questions only, capable of been writen clearly on the back of a postage stamp :) )

    No MHEG5 (just regular teletext)

    No mention of MPEG4

Germany only uses MPEG2. It's unlikely this does MPEG4

In France only PayTV and HD use MPEG4, regular free channels on TNT are MPEG2, so the fact it is used with "TNT" does not mean MPEG4

They seem to have the same love/hate relation ship to Lidl as we have. Part of the discussion about the satellite version (we have extensive posts on that).
