    God what a mind ****?

It was all going well until about 30 mins to go and I have no idea
what was real and what was imaginary.

    They way she kept saying
    "Deeper" and that sawing sound.

Its a good movie and needs another watch but not right now. Maybe next month or year or something. Not right now though....

The entire final act was masterful film-making - the intensity of 'that' sequence is one hundred times more chilling that any Saw or Hostel. Hell, the whole film is pretty masterful. I wish I saw it not knowing what was going to happen (trailer kind of gives it away). But I've yet to see any film mash two genres - romance and straight up horror - together into such a coherent, effective piece of work. Certainly one of the greatest 'horror' films ever made.

Now if there's ever a film that would need a second or 3rd viewing, it's Audition. It is one of the deepest, most intellectual films you could ever hope to watch. I've read hundreds of different opinions on the narrative, written quite a few myself. There's just so much to it, and many different ways to read it.
All of it is real. Or none of it is.

One way I was looking at it was a commentary on the cyclical nature of violence, we learn that Asami was abused as a child, and we learn that the person who abused her had been abused themselves. Therefor, it's all real, a cycle of violence.

Another way to look at it, is that it's a man's perceptions and then anxieties about the woman. Aoyama is looking for something specific, and he projects what he's been looking for onto this woman, but doesn't really see who she is. At the start, she's someone shy, demure and very timid. But when she tells him about herself, his view of her becomes shattered, and from that point she takes on a more sinister persona in his eyes. We don't really get to see the real girl.

There's a lot of different ways you can interpret the film, and that's what made it one of the most fantastic films I've ever seen. I'd read something about it, a different take on what exactly it was about, then go back and watch it with that in mind, and think to myself "oh yeah, I can see that."

I'd definitely say to you give it another watch, maybe try and interpret things for yourself.

looking at wiki pages for films I have seen just for background info is a fun past time.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audition_(film)
During uncensored members-only shows at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin in 2001, some patrons collapsed in apparent shock.

    RIght who was it?

Totally agree with this. I've seen hostel and its pales in comparison to the intensity and intelligence to the way this film was shot.

You don't get to see her
    insert needles under his eyes
    and the fact its
shot from his point of view ads to the whole uncomfortable feeling
    .

But its not about all the torture its the build up and also the relation between him and his son. I loved the scene where his son introduces the girl and he gives OK sign just as he leaves.

His friend as well, they guy who initially comes across unlikeable genuinely cares about his and doesn't want to see him hurt.

    Fantastic movie overall. Really impressed.

What are his other movies like? Any recommendations?

A lot of his other films aren't as reserved as this - he tends to frequently top his own shock factor. Visitor Q breaks about seven taboos a minute, but is actually a sort of intelligent black comedy underneath it all. Not for the faint of heart, but worth a watch. Happiness of the Katakuris - zombie musical with stop motion sequences - does what it says on the tin! Didn't like his generic J-Horror film One Missed Call though. Have Rainy Dog at home which I still haven't watched even though I bought it around two years ago (!). He is certainly an interesting film-maker though.

Picked up Audition today (only 8 euro in HMV) to watch again after reading this thread last night - think I might show some unsuspecting friends :pac:

If you're enjoying Miike's work try Ichi the Killer - a very dark comedy with lots of OTT killing and completely off-the-wall surprises! :D

City of Lost Souls is also worth a look. Miike's take on a gangster/action movie hybrid.

Excellent film, very wierd and pretty depressing, but really great to watch. Another one of Mr Hungus's recommended that is definately worth your time.

Yea, this film scared the ****ing hell out of me. Once again very well told, great acting and wonderfully paced.

I've developed a massive crush on Su-jeong Lim who played Soo Mi :)
