If first car equals first insurance policy then forget diesel ...all you'll get on that budget is a tired old 1.9/2.0 diesel which will skin you on insurance cost

    totally agree

decent first car should be 1.6 and get the advance or ignition test

cars are still insured on a cc bias

    ...not it's not. A Citroen 1.5 diesel, non-turbo. Will do about 70mpg.

    Simple, old-fashioned, cheap.

...call me when you've owned a French car.

Meanwhile, I've had 4. My friend's Saxo did over 140k miles before selling it on, and it's still running perfectly. Parts it did need were daft cheap.

...aha, there's the problem -Td. I said not a Td. The old normally aspirated 1.5 diesel has no brains or turbo's to mind. That's what makes it good.

I don't understand the hatred for Citroen (especially the diesels). We had a 94 ZX 1.9D. Originally bought for my mother.

It was then used as a Hackney Cab - NCT every year etc. After it reached 300k miles or so it passed to my brother who put 60 or 70k miles on it.

About 3 months ago we decided it was worn out enough to upgrade so we bought a 96 ZX with 120k on the clock (€350). No warranty, sold as seen but we had all the spare parts you could need :)

Some idiot had rung an injector off, so we took the head off the old engine and stuck it on the new engine. I looked at the cylinders on the high-mileage engine and there was little apparent wear!

The 96 (New!) car just passed it's NCT and it's comfy, light and easy to drive as most cars these days.

The 94 ZX never broke down, not once since we owned it, and I would be confident in driving the 96 one across the continent if I had to.

Boo-Urns to you Citroen haters :p

I agree with you. My brother in law bought a 1 owner Xantia 1.9 TD (1997) in 2007 for 1650 Euro with around 80,000 miles on it. It is now on around 126k and has only cost buttons to maintain. A set of spheres (around 100 in total) fitted in a few minutes, and some oil changes. That is all.

So to OP. Find a good honest old Citroen diesel. The way to go for cheapness.

Citroen ax or bx in 1.5 or 1.9 diesel. Slow but reliable.

Running a 96 Peugeot 406 TD at the moment with 205k with no problems...:)
    Still on its original clutch...
    Great reliable,comfy, mile muncher...:D
Getting between 42-48 mpg...even had it running on 70% veg oil 30% diesel
last summer when the diesel was E1.40 per litre...it loved it ....:)

As above only expence is the Tax & Insurance is costing me E1000 per year....:(
Tax is over E600 per year
    Insurance nearly E400 per year.
I would buy another one in the morning only the T&I is working out expensive.
Might opt for a van next time...it may work out cheaper....

I started driving in one of these. Engine is underpowered but bullet proof.

My sister pulled the sump out of hers and drove it home 2 miles with oil light on. Fixed sump, filled with oil and away it went again!.

Plus, they are old skool cool!

Hardly, head gaskets are a known failure on these.

PLus if you arent driving on motorways or in the city all the time you will have a pain in the sack putting bushes into them. They have very comfortable suspension but it comes at this cost

Not the least bit surprised. Look in buy and sell, you should find cheaper prices in there. Theres a lot of dreamers advertising on Carzone. Anyway, Carzone tends to mostly have cars in higher price ranges than the one your looking in.

not anywhere near as slow as the newer 1.9D golfs, I used to find the 1.6 nippy enough for what it was.

    +1 on the bulletproof

+1 again. I have one of the petrol ones. Bulletproof teutonic engineering. Cheap parts and cheap to run

one of the following would be your best bet

    citroen xantia
    citroen xsara
    nissan primera
renault 19/megane/laguna. they were reliable back then.

at that mileage the head could already have been done, they are fond off bushes but alot worse if lowered and theyre cheap to get off the likes of gsf, ebay etc if your willing to do them yourself.

there isnt too many other turbo diesel cars out there with the kind of spec the dturbo has for the same money. it is only 1300 euro after all.

just my 2p on them although im am slightly biased having had 3 306s so far lol.
