iPhone 2G screen replacement

I see the digitizer and screen are fused together for the 2G iPhone. I'm having intermittent screen problems (won't slide to unlock without a power on / power off switch, screen works for 15 seconds before ceasing to respond) and no amount of restores or unlock methods are changing that.

A replacement screen/digitizer pack is 88 euro delivered from a reputable Ebay dealer.

Is there any way I can definitively identify a faulty digitizer at the problem? I've restored it about 5 times using various
firmwares and jailbreak/unlock/activate methods with absolutely no change, not even temporary. Which leads me to
    believe it's a hardware issue.

Has anybody successfully carried out this procedure?

Is there any particular seller or brand I should buy on Ebay or does it matter?

I'm tempted to bin it and buy a new one but if I can get it done for 88 euro I will. Any comments welcome.

Hey mate I tried this and ended up buying the wrong parts from ebay 3 times. My advise would be if you want to try it then get the parts here:
    http://www.gethightech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=IPHONE

Here is the link to their disassembly video.

Its a tricky job so make sure you have the right tools as you will destroy the case of the phone.

If your not that technially minded get someone to do it might work out as cheap. Think I heard there was a place somewhere in city, maybe someone else will know(think there was another thread on this)

Best of luck with it and keep me posted.

The only issue I have is that I'm not 100% sure the digitizer is at fault. All of the screen works some of the time. I'll get 15-30 seconds before it will stop working. Pressing the power button at the top twice will get me another few seconds. I've changed all of the software, firmware, bootloader, baseband and tried different methods and combinations so I suppose it can only boil down to a hardware issue but most of the digitizer problems describe a portion of the screen being unresponsive or all of the screen being all of the time.
