There is a bit of a knock on effect from the writers strike, but there has been plenty of excellent films released this year. Let the Right One In, Milk, Synecdoche New York, Star Trek, State of Play (not brilliant, but a very enjoyable political thriller) Coraline to name a few. Mightn't have been any good blockbusters yet apart from Star Trek, but it seems like a packed enough summer so maybe there'll be at least one or two hits.

Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, Gran Torino all came out in 2009, in January. And I'd add Coraline, Star Trek and Let the Right One In to the list so it hasn't been that bad and it will pick up after Oct. I'd also add State of Play and Role Models, not great but good to the list. So 10 films in 5 months, it's not too bad. Can't wait for Synecdoche New York aswell.

2008 releases in America, but not here. The OP said "the last 5 months of Cinema have been awful" but they were released here in the last 5 months

I can't compare this year to previous years, since I've already been to twice as many movies, this year to date, than in the previous two or three years. This mostly has to do with joining the IFI, just to get me out of the house in the evenings. So I think it's been a good year so far, but not on the basis of the "general release" films you find at your local multiplex. If you want better, I suggest looking to smaller, independent films and cinemas.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I agree with this. It was another Juno tbh, couldn't see what all the fuss was about. City of God is a far superior movie in the same ilk as slumdog, made better by the fact it's based on a true story.

Slumdog was very good, but also amazing considering the budget.

A lot of rubbish in the last few years?? I don't agree, the last five years we've got - Eastern Promises, The Proposition, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, Dead Man's Shoes, The Lives of Others, Lust Caution, Crash, The Departed, Munich, Hotel Rwanda, The Savages, Pan's Labyrinth, Brokeback Mountain, A History of Violence, Little Miss Sunshine, Mar adentro(The Sea Inside), Sideways, Syriana, Babel, American Gangster, Atonement, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Gomorrah, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, The Counterfeiters and many more.......Plus box office hits I woundn't be into myself, like the Bond films, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter etc etc.

Plus the two best EVER tv series were also made during this period -The Wire and The Sopranos.
