My very first car was a standard, white Fiat 850, to which I added a matt black band along it's sides, similar to the red band shown in your pic. It used to let the rain in through the grilles in the boot/engine lid, so I made up some aluminium covers, fitted to allow the heat out but keep the rain out also. Overheating could be a problem as the radiator didn't have a convenient air supply, tucked in beside the rear wing, but working on the engine was best done by taking it out! Unbolt the rear panel, support the engine, undo nuts etc. and just roll the car forward, leaving the engine behind. A bitch to change the last spark plug, up under the rear parcel shelf, so in my case it only got changed when the engine came out to replace the gearbox. It was a fun little car until it was written off in an almost head on crash by a drunk driver. Totally demolished but somehow I walked away with bruised ribs. This was in the pre-"seatbelt compulsory" era but luckily I've always worn mine. Something that may have helped was the fact that the boot, in the front, was full of toolboxes etc. and helped to absorb some of the impact. I still remember his headlights passing by my head and he left my drivers side wing and door in the back seat!

Any of you remember the white Merc 1000 SEL that used to live on the coast road near Kilbarrick back in the last century?
    Thread on the subject here.
Actually it looked quite like the one in this thread but I don't think it had an AMG badge.
