Dont really wanna pay more than 800 i'd say but would stretch to a grand for a top quality machine.
Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

do you want a gaming laptop, or 1 4 internet/music mp3 use, or 1 4 connection to hdtv.
A STANDARD dell dual core cpu laptop with 3gig ram 2.oghz cpu ,dvdrw drive is fine 4 most people,if this is your only pc go 4 widescreen 15inch or 17inch screen.
4 HDTV connection hdmi out, not vga interface is handy.
WHAT ARE U USING IT FOR ?
gaming laptops have graphics cards 200meg vram video memory, with large fans, louder than standard laptops.GAMING requires geoforce or radeon cards,4 games ie crysis or callfduty4 ,if you are a hardcore gamer.
get A GOOD BRAND eg samsung, toshiba, dell, google laptops for sale irleand.600 will get you a very good dual core 2.oghz cpu laptop.or get a 17inch one 4 750approx widescreen.go 4 an extendede warranty.
    see dell.ie laptops.

Whats a better dell- inspiron or studio?
I will be using it for college, gaming, downloads and dvds- will prob get an external hardrive aswell.
Kind of want a good balance of all the above- I'm not really a hard core gamer- the odd strategy game would be it.
Will have a lot of college work on it though

Ok,get dell laptop,2.oghz dual, core HDMI OUT video out interface,3gig ram, vista or xp.theres only a few models with hdmi out.Check has it got built in wifi card, and 3 usb,and 1 pcmia slot.I don,t know the difference ,re dell studio etc.GET at least 250gig hardrive.extended warranty is good if you can afford it.CAN you get an os RESTORE cd/dvdrom.
Any laptop that has dual core specs as above will be grand,so think do i want 15 or 17inch widecreen.IS the weight important, will you be carrying it round everday? If this is your only pc go 4 a 17inch screen model.THE ones with radeon graphics card tend to be louder i
presume if they have an additional fan to cool the card, instead of one fan for the whole laptop.
I,M not sure about this as the last laptop i bought was a dell pentium 4 2.4ghz with a large fan just for the radeon card.
i,d advise you to get a laptop with standard Intel integrated graphics ,at least 140meg video vram.AS they tend to be cooler and quieter and they have less chance of overheating,or breaking down .IE
    they last longer.
