She's Drinking Diesel

I recently bought a 96 Opel Vectra (on the cheap). It’s 1.7 Diesel. Its only returning about 40mpg which surprised me as I thought it would be a lot better. Apart from its age, is there something I should be looking out for as regards why the MPG is performing so poorly? Or is this to be expected?

    Thanks

40Mpg is fine for a car of that age.

If the manufacturer's estimate is higher... ignore it... these estimates have no bearing on real life whatsoever.

    +1

It could be any number of reasons why it might not be getting higher though - where do you drive it, how much weight do you carry in it, has it been properly, driving style............

I have a mondeo TD of the same vintage. 40mpg is about right.

I got 47 mpg from an 89 mitsubushi galant 1.9td in 2001 when it was 12 years old.

All of the above really. Has it been serviced recently?

I'm averaging 48mpg and up to 54 mpg on a long run out of my 94 1.7 Izuzu TD engined Vectra with 262,000 miles, I keep any eye on the mileage cos the fuel guage is hugely optimistic. I don't do too much city driving though or hammer it over 65mph.

Have a look at the airfilter for starters. If that's old and durty, putting in a new one might improve things.

I once had a 1993 Ford Fiesta that was an absolute animal for petrol. I had the engine tuned (turned down) and it was amazing how much of a difference it made. Not sure of MPG though.

    thanks for the replies

Im driving from limerick to cork a lot and using the fermoy bypass (€1.90 a pop but hard to resist when caught for time). I suppose driving at 70/80mph is a killer on mpg. I'll check out the Air Filter thanks.

My 1.9 Tid Saab averages 38mpg, so I don't see what you're complaining about, tbh......

The odd time the filter may not "look" dirty ( say if the airfilter is white and the last owner of the car was driving daily past somewhere there was whitish dust ...roadworks or something)

if there's alot of motorway driving then there's something wrong. Drove Limerick to Galway once in a Bora 115hp and got an average of 61mpg for the trip. It was remapped to around 145hp but had the 6 speed gearbox.

...no, mostly commuting. I've had a 105bhp VAG, so i know how light they are, but you'll get nothing like that from a 150bhp diesel.

btw....if anyone else is running a 150bhp Sport 9-3 Tid, I'd be interested to know what mpg ye're getting. I know someone with the 2.2 and that's low 30's.......

how so, i think its makes sense if in really try i can get 48 but no matter how hard i push on (private roads etc) never lower than 38 (on the 'puter )

op if you're doing 70-80mph regularly on your trip then 40 mpg seems ****ing brilliant to me. keep it under 60 for best economy.
