    Anyone using these ?

I was out the other nite with my brother. I was using Eley sub.s and he was using SK sub.'s.

The Eley sub.'s seemd to be very quiet compared to the SK ones.

I am beginning to think the Eley sub.'s are under powered compared to other sub.'s. SK's seemed to kill better too.

Anyone any ideas or impressions ?

I have never used Eley subs, I do use Winchester subs though and they have never let me down, I remember asking about Eleys and was told that they are definately very subsonic. I know some subs are right on the limit and are a little noisier.
    Air temps make a difference.

Ya I reckon they are very subsonic but as a result they lack the ability to kill humanely at much more than 50 yards

Have used Winchester myself, usually do tbh. But they are "out of stock" in my local dealers again. Bought Eleys as the only other option was CCI and the chamber in my rifle doesn't like them :(

Eleys were €8 per 50 too

I have Lapua as well, club or superclub, I can't recall right now but they are also subsonic.
They are solid nose though , a pin vice and a 2mm drill will make a fine hunting round if you have the patience.
Those Eleys are expensive aren't they?

Yes I had issues with Eley subs and switched to winchester and remmingtons and found them much better.

I use Eley subs and Lapua subs all the time and find there's no change in POI @50m for me. They are both good out to 100m+ on rabbits, and crows.I find any other bullit won't shoot as well as those 2 brands in my CZ 22lr, and as for HV's forget about small tight grouping.

€8 for hunting stuff?! I'm paying a tenner for Match EPS! That's very pricey.

I read a very good article last year in Airgun World about the power level at point of impact needed to kill a rabbit cleanly. The figure quoted was 7-8ft/lb for a clean kill on a headshot rabbit.
If I am not mistaken, an Eley sub would probably carry more than 70-80 ft/lb of K.E. at 100 yards, so... I think they carry sufficient poke to do the job.

I was told in one shop the Eley sub sonics were the quietest sub sonic but they had none in stock so I bought SK ammo (6 euro for 50) which is great in my CZ452.

In the next shop ( I was heading to Wexford ) I was told that Eley were not worth the money(and he never would stock them) so I bought Winchester subsonics in the blue box which the owner reckoned were the best for rabbits.

Eley subs are the most accurate round i have tried with my CZ 452.

Have also taken many rabbits with them out to 85 yards and all extremely humane kills.

Certainly not under powered for rabbits in my opinion.

hi i also have a cz 452 style , i love it, and a sack silencer. i tried eley subs and they were all over the place. i now use winchester subs and can get head shots on bunny,s out to 130 yards once i range them properly. i was plinking at 150 yards with it last week. i buy them 10 boxes at a time for €45. works out at 9cent a round. if you dont use a silencer you can buy a box of federal normal power 525 rounds for €22 now thats value.

Eley subs work great for me. By the way, my licence only allows me buy 100 rounds, am I missing something here?

Ask your FO for an increase in the allowance. Tell the FO they come in boxes of 500 and you get a discount for buying that many at one time, recession and all.

I asked for 1000 .22lr and got it increased to 250 and at the same time the FO put 250 down for the shotgun. Then asked for 500 on the .223 it came with 250 on it and I have asked for 500 for the .308

They the "SK" ones? My brother uses them in his Sako Finnfire Hunter and says he finds them very good.

Still waiting for Clive to divulge his supplier ;)

What exactly is meant by "grain" when talking about rounds? When zeroing my scope I used .22wmr hollow points by Remington, but since then I have tried a few different types. These ranging from 32 grain to 50 grain Federals I have yet to fire. I have noticed a difference in grouping with different rounds. Is this just the weight of the round or reference to powder used?

It's the weight of the round. A grain is an imperial measurement exactly equal to 64.79891 milligrams. So, a 40 grain .22lr bullet is approximately 2.6 grams.
