As an athiest....

I'm just wondering why anyone of any religion feel the need to worship their god(which obviously i don't believe exists). You assume that your god is the perfect being etc then why would this god then be so vain as to want your worship and would he really be so vengeful to penalise those that don't believe? Doesn't seem like a perfect being at all...

Also i find the idea that people can go into confession to get absolved of their crimes disturbing. I live to a higher standing than that because if i do anything wrong it stays with me for life, if christians do anything wrong they can take a trip down to the local church and be completely forgiven and maybe since they know they will be forgiven are more willing to do bad things?

This is another cry for attention from TheInquisitor........we get it, you're trying to pretend to be an atheist. If you're family were in a car crash and dying in a hospital bed infront of you, would you prey to god to save them?
Its easy to be an atheist when the lights are on and there's people around you, ask yourself if you're an atheist when you're alone in a dark place in your life.

And the smiley with the sunglasses beside the title makes it obvious that you think its cool to be an atheist and you think of this behaviour as almost being a rebel without a cause. Pathetic

I think that you make a number of false assumptions. Firstly, God doesn't punish people because of the though crime of non-belief. The notion that a loving God would do such a thing would, IMO, constitute a type of category error.

The idea behind judgement is not to dole out a cosmic kicking to all those who didn't believe or grovel enough, it is to judge all mankind because we all fall short of God's standard of what was expected. Often the word "judgement" bears negative connotations; however, this isn't necessarily always the case. Each of us is happy to make a judgement if we consider it a just response to an injustice. For the Christian (and I speak loosely here and include all Christian in this) the hope is that God will put everything right through and by his final judgement.

Secondly, although I'm not a Catholic, I imagine that you have misunderstood the concept of confession. The notion that a half-hearted sorry once a year is analogous to a get out of jail card is something I don't believe is compatible with Christianity. If God is omnipotent (or even just on the ball) then he is hardly going to be fooled by such childish deceptions.

No, I'd rather spend my time with them, talking to them directly rather than talking to something imaginary and being a hypocrite

If somebody claims to be an atheist then we should accept their word. There are atheists in fox-holes.

Let us try and keep this civilised for as long as possible.

Your nick is pretty ironic based on that post. As another athiest I'll break it down a bit.

That's just plain insulting. Try to be reasonable.

No I wouldn't. What would be the point in praying to a mythical being. He/She/It, even if real, wouldn't do a damn thing anyway.

Been there, done that. And yes I am - in good times and bad. That you even ask displays some ignorance of what an atheist is.

Ummm .... Why so aggressive defensive? You're not being attacked here- you're being asked a question. You could try answering it instead of this offensiveness.

As for the OP - I totally agree with the confession cures all issue. If I commit a crime I can't just go to my local Sergeant and beg forgiveness. But a christian can go to a priest and be absolved of anything. I also disagree (and I know this will be a volatile point but it does follow on) with the sanctity of confession. If a crime is committed and confessed to a priest why should that priest not be bound by law to report it to the civil authorities? I could confess a murder to a priest in the box and get it off my chest and be absolved of guilt yet serve no punishment for my crime because the men in black will not tell the cops. That's just wrong imo.

[edit]Fanny: I'm not being bitchy here (I think) - and I was typing this before you posted your last remark. If it's a problem edit/delete at your pleasure.

The purpose of the Christianity forum is to discuss Christian issues. It is not a platform for bored atheists to launch attacks against Christianity, and I don't believe that the inhabitants of this forum should have to put up with threads that are basically just an extended trollfest.

Inquisitor, if you have a question about confession or worship then ask that question in a polite and respectful way and no doubt Christian posters will answer your question. If, however, you are simply wanting to launch a tired tirade against religion then take it to the A&A forum.

    Thread locked.
