Using an eircom email address in outlook

Ok so heres my problem, I have been trying to set up my dads eircom email account on outlook but have been having a number of problems. After much googling and messing about with I finally got it set up, well I taught I had. He can receive e-mails on the account in outlook but everytime he tries to send an e-mail an error message appears. It appears that the eircom smpt I have entered won't allow him to send mail (I have webmail.eircom.net for the incoming mail server and mail1.eircom.net for the outgoing mai server).

We recently change ISP from eircom to upc and I suspect this is the problem with the smpt server. I have tried entering in the upc server (smpt.upcmail.ie) however it then prompts you for a username and password. As the e-mail address was set up with eircom he doesn't have a upc username and password (it doesn't work using the eircom user name and password btw).

I would be very greatful if anyone could help us out with this one, I'm hoping theres an easy way of sorting it out as he uses this e-mail address for work so it would not be an option for him to change his e-mail address.

    Cheers,

    Dublad

you have an option to authenticate when sending emails turned on

Look for the option and untick it

It's in with the account options. Don't have outlook setup here to check exact location

Incoming try mail.eircom.net and outgoing use mail2.eircom.net

If you go , start - run - enter ' inetwiz ' and follow the prompts , you shoud be able to to a test there and then.

In the meantime , remember he can access his emails from www.eircom.net using hoe Eircom username and password

isp's block other smtp servers other than their own

so you have (easiest) to use upc/ntl smtp

no authentication due to detecting you are a ntl customer

Thanks so much man, ur a life saver! I unticked that box and changed the smtp server to the upc one and it works fine now. Thanks again.

    smtp.upcmail.ie

As mentioned, you cannot use the smtp server of another isp as this would be an open relay situation and the server would be blacklisted very quickly.

Change the outgoing server to the above and that sould sort it.

sorry to bring up an old post but im having problems with my iol email address through outlook when i moved to UPC from BT. i changed my smtp to smtp.upcmail.ie, and there is no authentication set up. also, SSL is disabled after it told me that was the problem, but it made no difference, still unable to send emails, and its bugging me like crazy.

If i click on "test account settings" it says everything completes, but if i try send an actual email it says:
Task 'Mail - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

just to clarify, i can still recieve emails...

Another unhappy camper here: I've just switched to upc broadband, did everything right (outgoing smtp.upcmail.ie , no authentication), but my emails just won't get through!

The outgoing server keeps telling me off with this wordy message
"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxx.xxxxxxx@gmail.com'. Subject '<Subject line>', Account: '<my account>', Server: 'smtp.upcmail.ie', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.1.1 <xxxxx.xxxxxxx@gmail.com> recipient rejected 89.100.xxx.xx is in RBL', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79"

Anyone got any ideas? It looks like upcmail is rejecting my IP address (89.100.xxx.xx) even though I'm connected through their network.

    Have you tried authenticating?

    RBL means it's black listed.

are you using a static ip address?

I thought about trying to supply user/pass for the smtp, even though it's not supposed to require authentication.

The problem is, their mail servers require the username to be own address @upcmail.ie . I don't have such address, and don't have a clue how to obtain one? Their webmail page http://www.upc.ie/webmail/ allows logging in for those who already have an address, but it says nothing about how to get one?

I also tried using myupc username/password , but smtp.upcmail.ie refused it.

I haven't asked for a static IP, but it hasn't changed over the last 4 days since the service was turned on. I tried power-cycling the modem few times, but upc just kept assigning it the same address each time.

is it a business account or home account?

is it a business account or home account?

Just a plain residential Broadband Express package.

At the old address (D18), I used to be subscribed to NTL broadband until about 1 year ago, and never had such problems. But back then they weren't enforcing their own smtp server - I simply used smtp.register365.ie , where I have an address at my own domain.

I have another problem that is probably worth a separate topic: every now and then, the service quality totally degrades: ping goes from normal ~20ms to >250ms, DL from ~10Mbps to as low as 300kbps, and the UL suffers similarly.

It seems to be happening more often in the evening, during peak hours, but there's no rule. It would just get really slow for few minutes, then go back to 3-4Mbps, or even nominal 10Mbps, and just when I though it was a one-off glitch, it'd go down the cr@pper again.

At the old place, I never had this happen - here (D15) it gets so bad I cannot watch streaming TV without constant stutter, and Skype is next to useless: audio very choppy, and video totally messed up.
