its funny to see this post "passat woes" up considering only earlier i was givin out about the regulator goin on my (old) passat '99 so to continue my rant is is just me or are VW just riddled with little/annoying problems that add up quick!??
So far on my passat I've had to replace 1 window regulator. 3 door locks (locking mecanism ****ed) , sort a leak coming in under the drivers side door (again another common problem, local mechanic sorted it put some sort of new drainage system in, sorted now thankfully) but its just one thing after another.
This evenin comin home from work took the passenger side window down only to hear another regulator problem that familiar clickin/clunkin noise that preempts the thing stopping working altogether.
    Nightmare!!!
So I know my cars old an all but I know quite a few VW owners with similar stories and newer cars. The only thing that I can see thats reliable and in my case TDI will go forever is the engine, which dont get me wrong is incredibly important but all that other stuff is just as I say a nightmare to deal with.
If I didnt really like the way they drive which honestly I really do, I'd go for a Jap car ie Toyota. They just seem to be hassle free in comparison.
    Anyway rant over.

ps I had a seat cordoba (vw parts obviously) and had very similar problems like the regulators etc..

i know this probably sounds stupid but I've driven quite a few cars as I used to have a company car and when that was being serviced or broke down I got given a replacement.. the replacement was generally, a corolla, an almera, primera or avensis all of which I really didnt like the way they drove from the gears felt chunky/clumsy to the steering felt way too light and generally they felt to me like driving toy cars in comparison to a vw which just has more solid feel to it and i dont just mean the passat.
Ford was the only car i found within budget that had a similar solid feel. just my opinion obviously

The DMF is only part of it, only had the car since Feb 1st to go was the rear shocks, 4 weeks later the front shocks and tomorrow the DMF gets done. I sure there is more to rair its head. But in saying that I have driven alot of cars in my time, Nissan, Renault, Ford, Opel, Toyota and on and on. The Passat is the one I would go for every time, second to that is the Ford Mondeo. That solid feel better build feel.

yeah the mondeo is a maybe. Drove a focus before not a bad car. They feel way more solid than any jap car I've driven.

Whilst VW's aren't the paragon of reliability that people who've never had one would lead you to believe, the same as any 10 year old European car they will have issues.
