    How're we.

I've always had a thing for these, I think they're a cracking looking car. I wouldn't mind learning a few more bits about them, their history etc. Anyone know of any good sites? Or does anyone have any info on them?

Don't see many of them forsale either, which is a pity.

Do you want to move this to classics yourself or will I move it?

    Cracking little car.

I'd have a lot of time for one, although I dont think I'd ever buy one.

There is a lovely red mk3 that comes into me for work every so often.

Very usuable car, nice to drive, easy to maintain and get parts for.
There was an original Irish one for sale last year, looked like a nice enough car on the outside, it didnt originally have an overdrive but had one retro-fitted. I think it was ZE reg.

In this month's Practical Classics they compare it against the MGC GT, Opel GT and Gilbern GT. Not an awful lot of info though.

Arah if something nice came up, or something cheap that needed a bit of work I might consider it.

But when I do buy a classic, it'll be the first thing I buy.

I've a '73 MKIII - as you say they're a great car - I bought mine more or less for the 6 cylinder sound but I've discovered other advantages to them as well - they're low to the ground and handle well which means that you can get your driving thrills at legal speeds (feels like you're going much faster), they're very easy to work with, apart from a couple of exceptions, parts are cheap and easily available and they look great too.

I'd recommend that you register on www.club-triumph.co.uk - they're a very helpful bunch. For local contacts you should probably get to know the lads in the Irish Triumph club (http://www.triumphclassicownersclubireland.ie) - they're a very helpful and friendly club with none of the snobbery that you can encounter in some clubs.

The main disadvantage of the GT6 is that its low and easier to climb out of when you're young and flexible. Its also bumpy enough on poor road surfaces and the cabin can get hot on good summer days (not a problem here!) but that's about it.

    Here's something to ponder!

Let me know if you need any more info

Just make sure that it needs only mechanical work. Diffs, gearbox even engine (thrust washer disintegration apart) are easy to work on and relatively easy to replace/overhaul as a diy job. Bodywork is a different issue altogether and although its a cliche, buy the best that you can, within reason. My car is structurally sound and it'd have cost me a lot more overall to buy a cheaper one that needed work. Even the chrome can cost a good bit and the new stuff isn't a patch on the original brightwork. Sadly, unless you can find that rare species - a realistic Irish seller who doesn't think that their car is worth an absolute fortune - you're looking at buying in the UK. Even then, be wary of some of the specialists there - personally, I'd buy privately from an enthusiast club member.

Have to agree with you Limerick Man.
Triumphs are my fave car of all time!
Why oh why didn't the brits make more cars like them???

I'm biased cos Whosbetter? Snr had 2000s when I was a kid.

The GT6 seems like a brill little car.
I've never owned/driven one, though, I know that later ones are better for handling. Earlier ones had a tendency to oversteer violently if you lifted off mid-bend, due to the primitive rear suspension set-up.

    Mk3 onwards should be better.

    Thanks for the info lads.

I don't really like the front of the mk1's, the Mk3 just has those perfect lines. I'd say the hard thing for me would be to pick a colour, red/white/yellow. They all look nice on them.

If I could get one with a sound body, I wouldn't mind doing the engine work. It's a motto the father has always lived by.

Yeah, bodywork can be a killer, esp if you have no skills in that direction.

I've been employed as a welder in a past life. I was pretty handy at it too.

Sheet steel is a diff story though. You have to take how the steel will warp in a very short space of time , etc.

I'm just used to welding very thick steel.:rolleyes:like meeself!

I've a red MkIII whch I think about selling every now and again. If you're planning to be in the Kildare area at any stage then drop me a PM and you can have a look at mine. At the very least it'll give you a basis of comparison for any others that you look at subsequently.

I can lend you the Haynes manual for a GT6 if that is of any use...

    (I'll need it back when my GT6 is finished - say 2015 ;-) )
