Hidden History of TCD?

I've been working on a blog for the last few weeks called 'Hidden History of UCD' - http://ucdhiddenhistory.wordpress.com/.

From a brief google, it looks like even less has been written about the social/radical history of Trinity. Somebody should give it a go!

    Some events definitely worth mentioning:

    • 1968 - The King of Belgian's visit to Trinity prompted protests by a group of radical TCD students called the Internationalists. The Gardai broke the protest quite violently which prompted marches of up to 1,000 students in the days after against the police's actions and their presence on Trinity campus.
    • 1973 - Clashes between students and the Gardai during the Minsiter for Justice's visit to campus.
    • 1977 - The Clash played the Exam Hall in TCD. Their first of only two ever gigs in Ireland.
    • 1981 - An English business man addressing a seminar in the Arts Block was shot three times in the legs by masked men "in support of the hunger strikers". It is believed that a small Irish republican group called 'Saor Eire' was behind the attack.
    • 1988 - Three week student occupation of the East Chapel against increases in college fees.

    That's just a taster.

Wow, never heard about any of this (apart from the Clash gig). Would be cool to hear more stories like this.

http://ucdhiddenhistory.wordpress.com/2009/04/27/7-charles-haughey/ Trinity related, this amused me :)

When my parents were at TCD, <some band> played a gig on the steps of The Moyne Institute during Trinity Week. The week, not the sphere.

It didn't click instantly with me. I'd help you further, but it would lead overzealous mods to close the thread if you get my drift...

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank an unknown company for their decision to make simple discussion on a forum awkward and occasionally incoherent through that wonderful spoiler of freedoms, p!ssy legal action.

You go unknown company, you go.

You're a bad person. Although mine should be removed too, I didn't realise they were that old.

I deleted it and you're fully aware of what you were doing.

Yes this censorship stuff sucks, but unfortunately it must be done. Everyone should be aware of this particular rule by now so I really shouldn't have to be deleting posts.

Back to the topic now, thanks.

Even the most narrow-minded and stupid of mods (and god knows there's enough of those, forum moderation does seem to attract those with less than stellar intellects) can agree that there's no potential liability there

While I have found myself disagreeing with mods on a few occasions, I still find that very harsh. It's a tough job at times, trying to keep everyone happy. Don't understate their intelligence until you've tried to moderate a discussion forum to which you used to contribute freely, because unfortunately that divorce of interest often happens.

I've just deleted 4 more posts talking about what I just warned against... I'm sorry guys, all the good points in the world don't negate the fact that discussion of that particular company is not allowed on this website. I'm going to look into some grey areas, but until then... just read the sticky.

Can we get some clarification on whether we're allowed talk about previous Trinity Balls that were not run under MCD? It seems fairly obvious that we should be allowed talk about them, since they're not MCD events, but then, only a fool would second guess another fool.
