Are you talking about the cotton "fat-man pants" or the polyester type ones?I'd go with a medium if you're going for "fat-man pants", I'm a 32" waist and have a pair of small ones. The polyester one's are smaller fitting and well I'd take a medium in them so probably be a large in them for a 36".
