    Oldie but a goodie.

Great cast- Cusack, Arkin (scene-stealing bit-part), Piven (generally likable in that odd way of his), Azaria (Moe from the Simpsons), Ackroyd (offbeat as always, love him as a hitman).
    Great comedy.
Great themes- love, morality, going back to your roots etc etc.
    Great lines.
Nice direction with some great scenes (fight scene to Mirror in the bathroom obviously- nicely choreographed).
Great score (eighties fare- Pixies, Cure. Did i hear The Pogues in there towards the end).

Slightly cliche in parts but all-round decent film- just thought i'd mention it.

.... I killed the president of Paraguay with a fork. So how've you been?"

I loved it too ... thought Marcella was great ... "You'll find me later? Why??"

Debi bugged the bejesus out of me .... think it was that weird Jamaican accent thing  but the music and Blank more than made up for it.

Off topic but I read somewhere before that some expert evaluated alot of fight scenes in films and he said that the hallway fight in this was by far the most realistic one if two people who were trained really had a fight to the death.

I loved the dialouge in it from Cusack. One of my fav films def in my top 20.

when she opens the door and says "ya cyan't come in" ?. cos thats a reference to the specials song playing in the background.

the other assassin guy is a world-famous kickboxer (Benny something??) who's trained with Cusack for 20+ years. the way they read each others little moves, and the way they duck and some of the hits don't connect, really sells the realism of the fight. and what a brutal takedown.

Yeah "Benny the Jet"- can't think of his surname now- Basque i think.
Stabbing him with the pen (from the former schoolmate- the lawyer guy) must have been symbolic in some way- still trying to work out how exactly though? :p

    The takedown was class alright.

    Yeah that's the line.
    Love it.
Couldn't think exactly how it went.

    Thanks.
I was wondering WTF that was about myself.

Yeh great movie, always like it. It's the perfect example of a black comedy imo. Incidentally, I just watched High Fidelity, another good John Cusack flick. Too bad about the awful bitch they had playing his girlfriend.

Yeah it's a black comedy but for some strange reason i didn't think it was that black.

For me at least, Cusack's likeability/relatability makes it quite light
    (rom-com territory, even).

I'd consider things like The Cable Guy or In the company of men darker.
That's kinda strange because nobody actually dies in those.

With something like The Cable Guy, there was a real tragedy there with Carrey's character.
    This was just lighter.

its an excellent film. Another one that i cant turn off when i see it on.

But then it is helped by the fact i adore john cusack.

What was the name of his movie in new orleans or somewhere similar

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil?

The man is a legend, even made the very muddled War, Inc. slightly watchable.

One of my altime favourite movies (& one I'd love to see a sequal to, although I think they've left it too late).

Favourite scene - When he makes eye contact with the baby to "Under Pressure" just perfect.

Got out the dvd when I saw this thread and just finished watching it. What a great movie. brilliant acting, brilliant dialogue, brilliant sound track and really funny.

Even the small things, like where he is at the reunion and some bloke comes up to say hi by grabbing his arm to which martin nearly breaks thinking someone is attacking him. :D

Watched that bit three times the last time.
    The baby's adorable. :)
    The soundtrack fits it well.

War, Inc was originally supposed to be a sequel but the studio wouldn't let them so Cusack and whoever else changed it around, thats why all the themes and stuff are similar.

Grosse Pointe Blank is one of the first DVDs I bought, "I'm hurt, I'm pissed, and I have to find a new job!" :D

Watched this again last night and it still holds up very well with great music and the cast is excellent especially John Cusack, really hope it gets a special edition dvd release or is there one already available?

    John Cusack is an asshole.

Watched this last month for the first time in maybe ten years and the first thing that hit me was the fact that it was supposed to Martin's ten year high school reunion. Ten years! Texted my friends this revelation and they were similarly of the no fing way reaction. Now cusack has always aged fairly well but there's not a hope he's passing for 27ish. I think that the only reason this stood out is that I'm now older than blanke and first saw this movie when I was going to school.

He was only 30 when he filmed it, so just 2 years older than his character. Piven was 3 years older than his character and Driver 2 years younger.

love the fight between Cusack and Benny The Jet, it looks like a fight between two people who actually know martial arts (because they do) instead of an over choreographed movie fight. if you've never seen anything Benny was in, check this out:

and yes, he really did blow out the candles with a kick at 1.18 into it
