Crackling noise when playing DVD

I've got a problem with my PS3 when it comes to playing dvds. I have it hooked up to a 1080p sony bravia tv via hdmi, and everything works perfectly, except for dvds.

When i play a dvd, after about 5mins a slight crackle begins and you can see a streaking white horizontal line on the tv. This gets progressively worse, and after about 5mins it reaches it's peak and sounds a bit like a thousand velcro pieces being pulled apart simultaneously, with as many white lines streaking across the screen. Then it'll start to die down and eventually stop after 10mins or so and the dvd will play normally.

I don't know what it is. As i said, games, blu ray etc all work fine. And i did a test once in that when it was at it's peak i left the dvd and went to the main PS3 menu, and all the noise stopped and everything was fine. But when i went back into the dvd it jumped straight back into the peak of the crackling...

    What is going on!?
