Does my sky multiroom second box REALLY need a phone connection?

    Hi.
I'm getting sky HD this week and I've chosen to move my sky+ box into another room. The only problem is that there is no good way to run a phone cable to the second box. Any plan involves going to crazy lengths, running over half of my downstairs, pulling up carpets, running onto tiles, up walls, over doors etc.
So what should I say to the installer? I assume the phone connection is so they can sell you pay per view stuff, but I won't be doing that ever on the second tv.
    Thx.
ps have tried wireless routing (digisender), but it won't work at that location (interference on screen).

you have to have a phone connection for multiroom.

its so sky can call the boxes at the same number to verify you haven't given the box to a neighbor.

Step 1 buy 50 metres of telephone cable.
Step 2 drill tiny hole in window frame nearest your phone socket.
step 3 drill tiny hole in window frame of room at second box.
step 4 feed the cable in at both points and hook up.
step 5 secure the phone cable with the necessary staples to the outer wall in the route it takes between the two rooms outside.

No carpet up and it should take 30 to 40 minutes if you are anyway handy and have the materials.

What if he does not have wooden window frames?

Step 2 drill tiny hole in window frame nearest your phone socket.

Its not clear in your post. Did you try the wireless phone extender kit or was it just a digisender box sending Sky to another TV?
Heres is what you need if you haven't tried it: http://www.xtendedplay.co.uk/rtx-wireless-phone-jack-line-extension-kit-dect-extender-prodid-155.html

Yeah, a wireless extender works a treat. I have used this one:

I really hope you're not a Satellite installer....

Op. as suggested get yourself one of those wireless phone extenders, they work really well.

And it's not just the 2nd box that has to be connected to phone line when you go multiroom, it's both, for the duration of the Sub.

I'm open to correction as I don't have sky but I think i read here before that they only require you to have it plugged in for the first 12 months?

It says in the small print of this one that it doesn't work with sky hd.

The Wireless PHONE Jack does not work with the following:

    Sky HD receivers
    Some models of Sky+ receiver.
    Panasonic & Grundig Sky receivers
    BT Redcare alarm monitoring system
To extend an ADSL broadband connection

The OP is talking of Sky multi-room, you must always have all boxs connected to a phone line...

I can confirm that this works with at least some SkyHD boxes (i.e. mine) and some sky boxes. :)

Could someone link me by the way to a wireless phone extender that works with sky hd-they sound like the best plan,I'd never heard of them :)

I had a standard Sky Box in my Sitting Room, and then about 8 months ago I signed up for Sky HD and Multiroom. The new HD Box is now in my sitting room and the original Standard Box is in a different room.

Like the OP, it was very awkward to run a phone cable from this room to the phone port in the hall. The installer gave me approx. 30m of phone cable and plugged the standard box into the phone port in the hall while he was setting it up. He then unplugged the cable & coiled it up behind the standard box and told me I could plug it back in again if needed.

Since then the standard box has never been plugged into the phone port. The HD Box has been permanently plugged into it. I've never had any problems and Sky have never been in touch with me. If anyone ever does contact me about, I'll just connect the cable and say it must have been loose...

I'd keep an eye on the bill from sky though as they may just jack up the bill amount without contacting you.

I check the bill every month. But just curious, what would be their reasoning / logic in increasing my bill? Sure, they can contact me about the line not being connected, but are they just allowed to increase the bill if it's not?

Well their reasoning would be that as both boxes are not connected they are allowed to charge full sub for both. You will probaly find they have covered this in their terms and conditions. They should contact you but their customer service is not always what it should be and i've heard of cases where they charge first and wait for customer to contact them.

I have had sky in for 5 years now and took out phone line after first week because I didnt want extra charges when family used games etc ive never had a problem having no phone line in and even informed sky at one point when I rang that there was no line in as I didnt have a phone and they said nothing

Also a few years ago on watchdog there was a report on how when sky called up the boxes and people were charged hundreds for these calls

you don't need it if you only have one box. it is a requirement for multiroom
