Recording with Line 6 Gearbox

    Hey everyone,

I'm doing a little home recording, and I have a small issue that you might be able to help me out with. I'm using the Line 6 Toneport GX with their Gearbox software, and I'm recording this to Reaper. When I play through Gearbox, I can get nice tones. The issue arises when I record a track to Reaper; when I play back the recorded track, it is at a much lower volume, the audio seems to lose some clarity and "oomph", and sounds pretty muddy. I usually use the "Normalize" function to add a little gain, and this does a little to help, but it still sounds a little muddy.

My goal is this: to be able to get the exact sound I play through Gearbox played back in Reaper. Can anyone shed any light on this?

It sounds to me like it is your pre amps/Mic pre or even your analog to digital converter?

The Toneport itself acts as an analog to digital converter & soundcard. I can get a great tone while just playing, but it's when I play back a recording, that's when I get poor sound quality. I'd imagine it's got something to do with how this signal is sent to Reaper.

Did you pay for a Gearbox license?
AFAIK, if you're using the Gearbox software that came with the Toneport and haven't bought a license for it, it will only work in stand alone mode. You won't be able to use it in Reaper or any other DAW as a VST without paying for a license.

Thank's for that. I've been using it in standalone mode, maybe that's why I'm having problems with it. Cheers.

I got gearbox with the tone port with license included, works ok with reaper. Infact I downloaded the upgrade today and for some reason it's working, sound wise, perfect compared to what it was like.I had a constant hiss on recordings,on mike and plugging an instrument directly in to it. As far as I know you only have to play for extra effects, the program should work ok once you have the licence, which comes with it. My problem is I can record on cubase,it shows it's picking up the signal, but I can't hear anything on playback.
