Sit Down Shut Up

Surprised I can't find a thread on this here, considering all the arrested development fans.

Been watching this over the last few weeks, and, like Arrested Development it feels like a slow burner. It seems to be making all the same choices that made AD great, but also got it inevitably cancelled. None of the characters are likeable and it's starting to rely more and more on self referential jokes. I even feel it is referencing Arrested Development jokes in places which, while I find it funny, is going to completely alienate people who haven't watched AD.

    imdb: Sit Down Shut Up

Created by Mitchell Hurwitz, stars Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and the fonz "Henry Winkler" (from the AD cast)

Arnetts character, Ennis, like Gob, is already my favourite. Batemans character is like a mirror image of the one he played in AD also.

Anyone seen this show? The pilot was awful imo, but it's been slowly getting better since.

Thought the pilot was absolutely terrible and didn't bother watching anymore... shame as I'm an 'Arrested Development' nut!

It's been yanked from the schedules by Fox (link) so hope you weren't enjoying it too much!
There was more unsettling news for Fox's Sit Down, Shut Up. The animated program from Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz has been pulled from the schedule, not long after it was demoted to a weaker time period on Sunday nights. Will it ever be back? Probably not.

not really surprised by that. Hurwitz is clearly standing his ground with this and not making a show that is going to get the ratings.

Like, take the last episode. All the way through there are prompts on screen saying "will be funny on the re-watch"... but this means on your first run through of the episode you won't laugh at any of the jokes... horrible decision imo. Also, increasingly, the characters break the 4th wall and refer to themselves in a cartoon or TV stereotype. Funny for the likes of family guy, which clearly has positioned itself outside of reality, but this show is supposed to have a narrative and structure.

The laughs have been increasing over the last few episodes, but I can understand it being pulled by FOX. It's pigeon holed to only being appealing to AD fans who are willing to give Hurwitz the benefit of the doubt, who also watch FOX...

It's a real pity because I was really hoping that Sit Down Shut Up would be the spiritual successor to Arrested Development. If only it had gotten a full season to prove itself.

Even if it then had got cancelled at least DVD sales might of given the execs at FOX a reason to give the green light to a second season.
