UHF Aeriel- Where am I pointing ?

Just installed a Vision 76 CD/Wideband aeriel. I live in Ashbourne by the way. I really should be pointing at Clermont/Carn but the signal is not the best to be honest from there, I live in a dip. Pointed it south towards 3 rock and got the same result, in fact I have a UHF signal finder and it told me that this was the stonger signal direction (full power on the meter). However when I look at the TV the reception is poor. When I then ignore the meter and start to rotate the aeriel the TV reception is far superior when it appears to be point East. Where the hell is it getting the signal from over that direction.

Could be Kippure or Mt Leinster. More likely Kippure.

OP would be getting RTE 1 & 2 on VHF then if from Kippure or Mt. Leinster.

Marcopol: if you go into your TV's menu and select, maybe, the manual tuning option, the channel number or frequency in megahertz might be displayed for that channel. Knowing the channel number or frequency would pinpoint where your reception is coming from.

This is a link to a UHF frequency guide. The UHF channel number is matched to the frequency in megahertz.

For VHF channels see this link. Go to Europe section - Irish system.

Checked the manual tuning and came back with the following

    RTE 1 on Channell 29
    RTE2 on Channell 33
    TV3 on 35
    TG4 on 59

This is the aeriel I am using. Is the orientation correct or does it matter with this type.

Three Rock alright, but channel 55 for TG4. Orientate as in picture below. The picture of the aerial in your link is horizontally polarised. Signals from Three Rock are polarised horizontally too.

The vertically mounted illustration would be the setup for Clermont Carn. UHF channel numbers for C.C. are 52 (RTE1), 56 (RTE2), 66 (TV3) and 68 (TG4).

Hi Marcopol where did you get your aeriel as I am in Ashbourne myself and am in the process of dabling also. Did you have to stick it on the roof or did you get away with putting it in the Attic?. Hows your signal looking and did you stick with three rock.
I have a mate over in swords who's putting one up two so will more than likely be pointing his towards three rock as well

    Thanks

    Got my aeriel up North.
Because I am in a dip I am not getting a good signal from Clermont Carn near Dundalk. I have the aeriel on the roof and receiving the signal from tree rock, its OK but not perfect however. Depending on where you are in Ashbourne you should try Clermont Carn first. I have a UHF signal finder if you need a loan of it, it will help you find the best signal. I am out of the country and back on Wednesday.

IF I buy a UHF/wide band airiel from the like of B&Q etc are they all DTT CAI certifed. Another words will the airiel work when DTT channels when its roll out?

    Thanks

Yes. A UHF aerial is a UHF aerial. Doesn't matter if you are watching analogue or DTT - it's all the same at the RF / aerial level.

IF they are certified they should have the CAI logo on the box or the antenna but if not it does not necessarily mean its a bad antenna or will not work with DTT.
