Audi A6

Anyone any experience of the A6. There are a few three-year-old ones for under €20K at the moment and I reckon it might suit me as I'll be looking for something with a big boot (buggy), that's comfortable and with nice interior. Not too worried about pinpoint handling so long as it's decent enough to drive.

We might have to hang on to it for a while (4-5 years) so I'd like something I'd be happy to stick with and reckon the A6 could be the one. I know the 5 series outboxes it on reviews but try as I might I can't get excited about BMWs (the 5 series is also more expensive.).

    Thanks,

    Ro

PS: I'm specifically asking about the A6 here, rather than looking for suggested alternatives.

I got a new 2.0TDi in February after much comparing and soul-searching. I absolutely love it, really nice to drive, great motorway cruiser, good spec in the SE version. May not be a razor sharp handling machine, but it doesn't bother me, as I don't drive quickly anyway. Huge boot as you say, and the new one has the added adantages of €156 a year to tax and near 50mpg average.

THey're a good comfortable cruiser alright, not a bad buy at all. The early 2 litre TDi's aren't the most reliable unfortunately, you might be better off looking for a petrol one if you don't do too much miles. It'll be cheaper to buy. The 2.7 TDi might be an option if your budget stretches.

When you take one for a test drive, make sure you find a bad road as the ride can be a bit crashy on them. Also, I found that my left knee rubbed off the transmission tunnel which got a bit sore after about an hour. This is as much to do with my driving position as much as the car.
Just try it and make sure you can get comfy and that the ride is ok for you.
Apart from that, I'm a fan. Drove a 2.7tdi for a bit, if you could stretch, it would be WELL worth it!! massive amounts of torque! The interior is one of the classiest places you could sit too.

Great looking car - arguably nicer than the 5 series. Decent interior too. Drove one last year with the 2.0 TDI engine (has this since been replaced by a common rail?) and while it pulled well, there really was a Massey Ferguson noise from it! Bear in mind though that even the biggest saloon boot soon disappears once you have a buggy in there! Would you consider the A6 estate - which has a frigging enormous boot?

Yes, new one has common rail, much quieter too. it would need to be some buggy to put a dent in that boot though!!

CO2 EMISSIONS are 161...how does the tax only come in at €156?

The oul fella has had one since '05 and has put 80k on it. Its the 2L Tdi SE spec with leather.

    Bad points:
Needed a new turbo at 30k. Leather on steering wheel and gearknob is made of cheese. Struggles to put power down on wet roads. Needed clutch and flywheel at 80k, clutch was expected as the fecker rides it but the flywheels are a known issue. Needs VAG approved fully synthetic oil. Engine slightly rough. Big car to park, could do with parking sensors.

    Good points:
Great handling, great interior, 600 miles to a tank. Looks better than a 5 series imo. Really nice power delivery means that the engine feels more than its 140hp. Great gearbox. Great mile muncher, rides about a mllion times better than a 5 series. Big boot. MMI interface is easy to use. Try to get one with bluetooth prep as its great. Cream leather seats are comfortable an don't wear badly.

    Overall:
Me da is delighted with it but wishes he had got an auto avant as it would have suited him better. If he gets another it will be the 2.7tdi too.

In the UK, dime a dozen with higher spec, and if i'm not mistaken, pre 08 at new tax band system also

One thing i'll point out to you in clutch issues. We've been having a horrible time with VAG clutches recently - in particular on a 07 2.0TDi 140 A6 that was handed back because of its problems.

Pre-08 would be on old motor tax system, but new VRT system.

Savings based on new VRT system would be minimal I'd expect, as '07 model is in band E iirc.

    Ro

I've had mine since the new models (4F) came in to the country in 2004. I've put about 90k up on it and have had no issues (bar a faulty fuel sender at the very start).

My only criticism would be it's pretty heavy on brake pads - and they ain't cheap.. As regards economy etc., I'm getting mid 40s on a long run. Its the 3.0tdi version with tiptronic - so I haven't had any of the clutch issues that an earlier post had. The car hasn't had any major work (bar the timing belt) and it sailed through the NCT earlier this year.

There are a lot of cars on the market with very basic spec but if you look around you'll pay little more for a fairly high spec version. The base price of mine at the time was 63k (I think) but Audi being Audi, meant that in order to spec it up a bit, cost another 18k. In today's market I doubt I'd get 15k - so there should be lots of value out there.

Regarding 'buggys', the boot is enormous. Countless times I've had the double buggy along with 2 Mclarens in the boot with room to spare. The only downside is, its a real tight squeeze to get the seat belts on in the back if you have 3 kids in seats.

There's a pretty good American forum on them here : http://forums.audiworld.com/forumdisplay.php?f=58 where you'll pick up plenty of tips / tricks / advice. I've used it pretty regularly to keep my MMI software up to date (you load it via DVD in the CD Changer). In addition, if you ever want to add something you're missing (e.g. satnav etc) then this crowd in Germany seem well regarded http://www.kufatec.de/shop/index.php/cat/c111_A6---4F.html

Anyhow - good luck with the hunt - great car.

    Podge
