Don't know really. But I'd be more than a little surprised if there were.

hi, im in the first year of the course now in NUIG. im one of the guinea pigs you could say! its a small class, 15 in total, thats the max allowed. guys are allowed to do it and i think our lecturers would love if some joined next year but at the mo its just all girls. they asked for our feedback and actually took it on board so id say there will be a few changes. they threw us into the deep end at first- well those of us coming straight out of L.C. but they said they are def gona ease next years first years into it.

im sure you know that you will have 3subjects rather than two after 1st yr(as with a normal B.A) but in 3rd year it is completely womens studies- but they are working on having some classes combining womens studies with another of the BA connect specialisms eg theatre&performance. also there is alot of work experience-a whole semester in 3rd yr which is a huge benefit over a normal BA. we have been told there will be some skills based classes in 3rd year aswell eg ECDL courses and even a little graphic design - things that will help for employment purposes.

i will say, it takes alot of thinking and adjusting the way you think or see the world around you or at least thats what i noiced about myself after a month or two.

our first assignment was running throughout semster one, lit was a weekly journal, 250 words a week, at the end we had to select 8entries to hand up. it didnt need to be typed or anything. it is not a highly academic subject in the sense that there is no simmer or xmas exams, just an essay at the end of each semester of about 1,000 words. there are not a lot of assignments in the first semester especially. this semster we did a small play in front of lecturers/tutors, we had scripts in front of us and it was worth 30%- im not trying to say its an easy pass but if you enjoy the things we discusss in class & are willing to turn up for class then the fact that it is an extra subject will not be much of a burden on you, more of an enjoyment.

if you have any more questions just ask, il let you know anything.

    phew that was long:rolleyes:

i have this on my cao as well but i didnt realise that in third year you only studies womens studies. What are the career opportunities? I was hoping to keep my options open. How many hours a week is the course?

well, you study womens studies with another of the Connect subjects for a while in 3rd year and then you have 8-10 weeks of a placement. oppurtunities are the same as with the normal BA except in my opinion a little more broad eg not only can you do teaching, journalism etc but you can do something along the lines of social work, womens counselling or something related to domestic violence etc. im not too sure as im only in first year but with your other two subjects as well ur options def are not limited. theyre starting arrangements for our placement now, mine is hopefully going to be travelling around to schools educating the teenagers about domestic violence or rape, which is what i want to do afterwards anyway,or something along those lines.

and the hours per week, for us was 2hours of lectures and one tutorial a week compared to 3 or 4 hours in other subjects minus tutorials, so its pretty manageable. they told us that in 2nd year it will only be 2hours per week

:pac: Well yea for womens studies I just had 3. But well, for example, in total with my other 3 subjects, I had 16 hours per week.
No prob! I just love the subject even though to be honest I fell into it because the points were lower than for normal Arts last year..... I got 340, 5points less than I needed:mad: But it worked out better in the end and now I love it! Having a small class in a place like NUIG was a godsend. I actually got to know people! lol:P

    No probs at all!
I forgot to mention..... the Womens Studies classes are held in the Women's Studies Centre which is... a house. It may sound a bit weird but it's like a conference room in a house (because we're such a small class they moved us from our original crappy classroom up 3 flights of stairs in Áras Moyola). Theres even a small kitchen we can make tea in and stuff like that. Sometimes the Postgrads leave their biscuits behind in the classroom so we get them:P
Will I be seeing you there in September (provided I pass my exams tomorrow  ) ??????????????

sorry one more thing! has your lecturer said that you can go into a postgrad with helping girls deal with rape or domestic violence? or would you need psychology?

Well one of my tutors is doing a postgrad in domestic violence, but I think hers is more on the legal side...not sure but I know she does research in the courtroom and also goes to the shelters, she doesn't really say what she does there though....You should google it??? Or look into requirements for some of the postgrads that you might be interested in?

Well good luck to ya anyway :D hope to see ya!!!
Not sure about how the points thing will go tbh because at first I thought not many applied because they hadn't heard about the whole Connect thing...But then I found out the points for feckin Creative Writing - 485 or something :O
We were told they'd probably all be like, around 360/370, just a tad higher than the normal Arts course... Hmm well we'll see in a couple months not to worry :D
    See ya in September ;)
