Have about €120 to spend on my first set of shoes and pedals for a Specialized double. There seems a good shoe sale in chain reactions at the moment looking for a size 44 plack shoe would the Shimano R075 or R076 Shoes be any good? With pedals like the R540 ?

Not set on shimano at all if there is a set in the may sale that is particularly good value for the spec. Cheers!

Might be better considering look pedals, Shimano prices are a bit mad right now and looks provide a more "natural" system in terms of freedom of movement. I have ultegra pedals myself and the wider platform doesn't allow the foot to roll which some people find uncomfortable. I don't know if shimano shoes are look compatible however (must be as SPD-SL use the same bolt pattern).

Also, you can get those pedals *slightly* cheaper from cyclesuperstore.

I have shimano MTB shoes, nice but I can't compare them with the road shoes. I wear SIDIs and don't think I could ever get anything else, far too comfy.

Expect much berating from the euro police over black shoes, they look fine though.

I'd get something with a ratcheting closure system, it is a very nice feature compared to a Velcro top strap, lets you get the shoe good and tight and is more adjustable on the bike. Looking for new shoes myself at the moment as currently just have MTB ones.

That looks to be a great sale, and I need new shoes, so I was checking out some of the reviews and noticed loads of comments along the lines of "normally I take x size, but you need x+1 for this brand".
Is this endemic because cycling shoes need to be tight and are uncomfortably so till broken in, like ski boots?
My current shoes (cheapo 661) feel tight, but the straps are at max tightness (which is a problem because the buckle rubs at the join between the anchor and the velcro strip, causing it to fray).

Cycling shoes are meant to be tight all right, but I don't think they really break in as such, if it was tight in the toe when you try it on I would reckon it is too small for you.

Thanks for the tips, those Shimano R085 SPD Shoes would not be compatible with look pedals would they?
Is the only difference between SPD and SPD-SL bolt configuration or is there a big difference between the systems? I cant see a shoe at that price range that is SPD-SL with the rachet system you recommended blorg so should I go for a SPD only system?

PS I meant Specialized Allez double, whatever ya call it

Yes the R085 are Look compatible, it says it in the description. Basically you want a road shoe with the three-hole bolt pattern.

SPD is Shimano's mountain bike shoe, two bolt pattern.
SPD-SL is Shimano's road system, standard road three bolt pattern.
