I hear this about jobs in Public Service that there is this going on?

Does this mean that even if Joe Bloggs quits/retires or is fired (), then he wont be replaced

God the heads up arse way they run that is quite shocking. Private sector is also up the creek but still manages to let the odd head in these days.

Surely they should hire when a business need arises

Anyways, what im after is a laymans definition. The above is my understanding of it and open to correction.

Are they combined morgues and crematoriums? Sounds like a sensible idea to me. Cut down on transport costs and so on. ;)

I think blanket measures like this are a poor idea in general. Social services and the Gardaí are just two areas that are likely to need more staff not less as the recession continues to bite. Like you say, they should hire as the need arises and with respect to the available budget.

Let the individual departments decide how to save money rather than handing down universal edicts from on high.

    So what?

The rest of them will have to work a little harder or maybe cut their lunch time down to an hour. The poor lambs.

i though the biggest complaint about the public service was that they were overstaffed and wasteful, i'm sure theres pages and pages of whine on this very subject.

Now the complaint is that *if* they let people go, they won't hire more people to maintain the same levels of bloat?

Jesus fucking wept, make up your damn minds, it's hard to be part of a mindless baying mob if you keep moving the goal posts! Now who am i meant to be angry at, and why?

keep this up and i won't have a comforting sterotype to trot out whenever i want to be angry at people for no real reason!

Yep, thats about the height of it.

Plus, Civil Service are offering staff 2 years pay over 3 years if they emigrate for the 3 years. When they come back they are put on a list to be moved back into the system when an opening arises.

My point is about how they treat potential applicants, not how they treat those with foot already in the door.

So no, you cant dismiss the argument as black and white, "will we hire a million people for no good reason or will we hire zero people, again for no good reason"

As i said, things are tight, no doubt. But theres no point havign a service if your not going to hire the right people to provide said service

By not facing up to this, service quality lessens and you get yourself into a deeper hole.

But not to worry, the income levy will no doubt be increased in the next budget to plug this hole. Oh wait... The moratorium will mean that the hole will not be plugged at all. Better increase the income levy again...maybe throw in some extra tax on poor Jimmy who commutes from Kinnegad. Or some homeowner tax on John and Mary. Sure the ECB rate is so low that they can surely afford it on that fixed Mortgage that is completely unaffected by the rate change. No point decreasing VAT - that didnt work out for those stores up north. Its not as if decreasing it will ripple down into savings on the whole with all parts of the supply chain benefiting the gross cost of the groceries.

Does anyone see a pattern forming here... ?

No need to worry. Joe Bloggs won't retire. He's a bitter, stubborn bastard who won't move an inch unless the union says it's ok.

We need more Nurses and Gardaí.

The moratorium means that none will be hired to replace those who leave.

Yes the public service is full of staff but it's a case of too many chief's and not enough indians.

Fire the hob nobs who do sweet f**k all i say!!
Keep the one's who are dediczted, work hard, are in a job that's worthwhile to the people they serve ie. the public.
