Contract of Indefinite Duration

    Hi,
I work in the public sector as an engineer and have been on temporary contracts for the last 4.5 years. Recently with the announcement that all temporary staff are not to have their contracts renewed I investigated the situation only to find that i should have been given a contract of indefinite duration when i was issued my fifth temp contract, or so i though.

Im now half way through my 5th temporary contract (contracts run for 1 year), i have served as an assistent engineer for 3.5years and as a graduate for 1 year previous to this. What i have been told through my union now is that our HR department are considering not taking the year spent as a graduate engineer into consideration because that position wasnt or couldnt have been a permanent one, and that leaves me with just 3.5 years service (4 years when my contract expires) and outside the cut off for a contract of indefinite duration.

Has anybody been in this situation or have any comments as to where i might stand on this???
