Fallout 1 & 2 - Are they still playable?

Hi guys. Quick question for anyone who's ever played Fallout 1 and/or 2.

Are they still playable in this day and age? I know loads of people loved these games but try not to look at them through rose tinted glasses (if you can, I know it's not easy).

Played Fallout 3 and enjoyed it. And Baldur's Gate 2 is probably my favourite game of all time. Having said that though, I tried to go back and play the original Baldur's Gate and found it nigh on unplayable. In terms of gameplay and design things had just moved on.

Are the Fallout games similar? How has time treated them? I actually have them both but have never given them a go. Are they worth installing?

of course they are, don't be silly.

so what if they aged badly a game is a game imo.

They're well worth a play. The storylines and characters are great. The combat is pretty much the same as the VATS system in Fallout3. My only problem is with the interface. It seems a little clunky and unintuitive. It still doesn't take anything away from the game, it just takes a little getting used to as it's a huge step backwards technically.

If you like Fallout 3, you'll love these. They're also a hell of a lot funnier.

They are very slow games but if you can get over that you'll enjoy yourself. Currently slowly getting through Fallout 1 takes to good old games.

I installed this again recently and could just not play more than an hour of it. As you said, things have just moved on.

If you played them when they came out then of course they're still playable. If you're playing them out of curiousity having played Fallout 3 then you're likely to be disappointed.

Most game stores should still have the Fallout pack (Fallout 1,2,Tactics) for <€10.
Failing that, there's Good Old Games.

You need to invest well more than an hour to start getting into it. Unfortunately thats a lot of time to find out if it's your thing or not.

Sadly, I'd the same reaction to it. I still play Baldur's Gate every so often, so I thought it wouldn't be much different, but I was surprised at how much more crude the interface was.

Yes, definitely. However, make sure to put on some other music than the default. It's just hours and hours of bongo solos.

    Hmmm... Inconclusive.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Very hard to know.

Might load it up during the summer after I finish my annual Baldur's Gate 2 replay. Maybe I should just download some of the DLC for Fallout 3 and give it a replay instead.

    There's always this option...

Fallout 2 is in my top 5 games of all time, it really is that good.

VATS was much more fun as well, if only for the fact you could also shoot people in the balls. The towns were interesting and had plenty of side quests: (becoming a pornstar or boxer) in New Reno. You could buy a car and load the trunk up with weaponry, travelling around murdering entire towns like a complete and utter badass.

If you liked Fallout 3 and can get your hands on Fallout 1 & 2, they are well worth a play.

If you're deciding to go back and play it again it might be worth trying the resolution patcher

I tried a similar on on Baldurs Gate 2 and Planescape torment and they were like new games. See my post on it here.
