Asking for a cert in work

    Hey all.
    Just a quick question about my job.
    A lil backround on it: I work in a specialised dept to do with electronics. I'm not too comfortable in saying what as you never know who is on boards!
    Anyways bottom line is, the job had to train me in the last few months to work with some of their machines and systems. This I feel is a specialty dept which I think theres only around ~40-60 people in are Ireland capable of doing for now.

    Recently I was told my training was complete even though I had long since become competant in it.

    Bottom line, Can I ask for some sort of written acknowledgement off them? I'd like to add it to my portfolio that I've been working on lately.

    Any comments/suggestions welcome.

    Im sure they would have no problem providing you with an acknowlegment of your training.

    Please don't take offence but are either sposs or Inreality managers?
    I ask simply because I need a managers point of view on this if an employee was to ask for something along these lines. I don't want to come across as petty in work. Either way, Cheers for the replies! much appreciated!

    I dont see anything wrong with looking for and receiving written confirmation for training completed etc in work. Especially now when employees are seen as disposable, loyalty to a particular employer is an outmoded idea.
    You will not be seen as less than ideal by showing an interest in other jobs as everyone is doing the same thing in these uncertain times.

    Well im currently managing director of my own company and have held management roles in another company. First thing i would think when an employee asked would be , great , im glad their serious about their career. :)

    @doolox, It's not so much because i'm looking for another job. I like where I am but based on my skills, I need to show should I ever migrate to another company.

    @Sposs, Thanks too! I'm glad to see someone high up would think this is a good thing. Especially as my contract is due in July. It's more for my own personal records though.

    One last question.
    Should I ask the team leader who isn't trained on them/the head engineer/Hr or general manager? Our head engineer is seldom around now as she can be quite busy on site.

    Who signed off your training as completed ?

    Ask for a written reference when you leave and get it mentioned in it.

    Also... your first post as two bottom lines. Make your mind up, we're only allowed one bottom line :)

    Well you can always comment on your suggestion e.g reasons :) I'll let ya :)

    as for reference, no. I'm not leaving the company but rather building up a portfolio as rumour has it of an internal expansion for a position i'd like. It involves references and interviews but is all a bit hush hush for now. Benefits are great. Even If I don't get it, It'd still be nice to keep track of my progress *should* I ever need to a potential employer my abilities/ skills etc.

    I'd imagine the employer would have a record or something somewhere of the training.

    Surprisingly no.
    There was never any proper formal training record given as such. Head engineer showed me once or twice then I would be left to look after myself which was why they took me on. Simply because
    I took to the job like a fish to water

    Exact off the record words from a high up member during a certain appraisal. Other than that my current acknowledgement is a mere spreadsheet poorly designed where I signed my name to verify I'm competant.

    I just feel after my time here I need something more to say that I've more than basic knowledge and have often diagnosed problems the more experienced couldn't etc. Also, Statistically I'm on the top consistantly ~4months. but thats neither here nor there.
    All I want is something to acknowledge my level of experience. I'll ask my Line manager tomorrow. I get on quite well with him or if it comes to it I can always ask HR who are very understanding but tend to go to someone too high in authority creating a bigger scene. I'd rather other employees did not know about my request
