    hi
im looking for some advice on what breed of gundog to get. i mostly do pheasant shooting with a bit of duck shooting so i would be looking for something that can flush out game and is a good retriever.
i have shot over a spaniel before and found it good at flushing out game but it was a bit whiney and it was difficult to get it to sit still for any length of time when we were duck shooting.
    any advice is greatly appreciated

spaniel or cocker is your man for flushing game and retreiving.

im a setter man myself but in hindsight it should have been a springer i bought, but as the the old saying goes a puppys not just for christmas.....

Any spaniel or lab will do what your looking for. The whinging bit when idle is about training and obedience, my old springer did that a bit, I used to give him a rub and he would quieten down, it's eagerness to "get on" and dont knock it too much.

My new pup who is 6 months is the most obedient dog I have ever had only because I am spending time playing ,interacting and getting him to sit/stay and recall. Dont get me wrong I havent even started serious training only play training if you get my meaning

German Wirehaired Pointer is the best...

Get a Weimaraner , they can be a nightmare as pups but def the best soft mouthed dogs and flush game very well.

A german wire hair is one of the best all round hunting dogs you can get,

but there not for the faint hearted or not a good first dog.

also they will take longer to train .

thats just some of the reasons i think a springer is a better first dog or general gundog.

Get yourself a springer from proper working stock. They go all day and give more years than labs. I do like labs though.
