MUSIC store HMV is diversifying its business by opening cinemas and cafe-bars above its stores.

The move is being piloted in Britain and the company said that if this proves successful it will role the concept out to other stores.

The cinema venture allows HMV to utilise unused space.

HMV recently agreed to buy five Zavvi stores in Ireland. The company already has nine stores here.

great something for the lads as opposed to tanning booths.

Yeah have to put something in that space where all those non selling CDs and DVDs were...does anyone believe blu ray is the future? Sounds like these guys don't!

There is no 'above' in most of their stores here is there? Especially the shopping centre ones

Great idea as long as it doesn't turn into an overpriced night out like sadly many new cinemas are now.

I presume in some cases it will be below!

Both Henry Street and Grafton Street could easily do this...Oxford Street in London used to have a mini cinema in store where you could go in and watch free movies -think they took it out funnily enough. Always a few people there given it was free:)

That would actually be awesome. I knew there was a reason I loved HMV.

Now it makes sense why HMV took over a massive Zavvi/Virgin shop in Glasgow that was about the size of the "Megastore" on Aston Quay.
