don't think so. Have a friend who's looking to do it who did Soc & Pol as one of the majors. not 100% though.

    No. Any subjects will do.

Although, primary teaching does have an Irish requirement so studying Irish as part of Arts could be very useful.

But, seriously, do whatever subjects you'll enjoy the most and do the best in. Then I wish you look with the application process for the primary teaching programme (called Hibernian I believe?)

A friend of mine did Public and Social Policy (Economics, Law and Soc/Pol) and she's up in Dublin now doing her H.Dip in Primary school teaching!!

So any subject will do really, but as mentioned above, Irish is a good one to have, she went to all irish primary and secondary and it stood to her in her interview.

Also, it would help if you gained some experience in a primary school over the next few years! They really like to see that on the application!

    Good luck!

Not 100% on how that works Tazbars, but im sure an Irish degree would automatically trump the leaving cert thing.

@hello_there_jim: As far as i know, it's not necessary but im sure it would give you a huge advantage to have English, Irish, Geography, History, Maths... whatever as your degree subjects. What year of study are you in? The university offers diplomas in courses, some languages definitely, and the Irish one is very popular. If youre already an NUIG student i think it only costs 100 euro for the two-year diploma. This means one late evening a week but im sure you will reap the rewards. If you think you're set on primary school teaching, why not do Maths and Geography or something like that, and the Irish diploma on the side? It'd be just as good to you, and an extra qualification. Even if you never use it, it'll be a good tool to have for the future.
