    Hello All,

Mate of mine has an issue , in the place he works they are making them take a number of weeks unpaid leave between now and the end of the year. Basically for example in June they have to take 2 weeks unpaid leave, and this will happen between now and December.

The question I have though is , in the time they are off , are they allowed to apply for jobseekers benefit whilst laid off at this time?

    Cheers

He should be able to get it, he'll need a letter from his employer stating he is taking unpaid leave at the request of the employer (in effect, its a short term lay off situation). With that letter and some proof of ID he can go to the local welfare office and put in the claim. Just tell him not to expect to actually get any money until long after he is back in work
